Anna Haupt and Terese Alstinat created the first "invisible" bicycle helmet. According to
TechCrunch, "The invisible bicycle helmet uses rechargeable battery-powered accelerometers and gyroscopes that detect the typical motions involved in a bike crash. They trigger a tiny gas inflator which instantly fills a nylon airbag with helium. The bag forms a hood around your head that cushions the impact of the street, a car, or anything else you slam into."
The product and company, named Hövding, began as the industrial design master’s thesis of the Swedish duo. Their motivation to revolutionize the bicycle helmet stems from their dislike of current helmet appearance and complaints over how uncomfortable they are. The inflatable helmet only works once and has a $600 price tag. Will you be next in line to purchase one of the cranial airbags?

They have been tested just like seat belts and air bags, they do save lives, from head injuries, and in cars, belts and air bags give very good safety support. Just take a tour of almost any State Police films about wearing helmets and the use of seat belts and the advantage of air bags.
Smart people were helmets, click seat belts and want air bags in their autos.
You said: "offers LESS than ZERO protection from any real world injury"
There is no such thing as a physical safety device offering less than 0 protections.
Not possible.
See “Fox News Today” about current events, video from yesterday 8-16-12 it was a PM broadcast about this race car driver that went over this steep hill side and had a totally destroyed race car, got out with a cracked rib, he had an X seat belt strap on, and helmet. Walked away from a totally destroyed auto and his helmet was cracked in three-four places. NO HEAD injuries. He would have been dead without that helmit.
Plus it meets the laws of my state that say I must wear a helmet.
It also protects my face from things like bugs and rain that actually hurt at any speed over 40.
