The Internet Is Making Us Crazy: Agree?

It is not making me crazy! I do believe that it can get out of hand for some people.

I don't know about making us crazy... but sure makes the nasties say some crazy things ...

Don't over do anything. otherwise, yes it could drive you crazy like anything you may abuse.

Perhaps not the internet itself, but certainly the way it is becoming entwined into everyday life through mobile devices, and with the social networking sites that do nothing but beg for attention. All that just exacerbates the more general problem of human "multi-tasking" that we've been buying into as normal for nearly thirty years.

Despite so many being accustomed to it, we are not built to divide our attention so much for so long. What's worse is that studies have shown most people are oblivious to the symptoms of mental diffusion that result. It's like having a blind spot when you're driving, except you develop more and more blind spots, yet never realize it.

The case cited in this article appears to compound that phenomena with sleep deprivation and high emotional anxiety, resulting in a much more dramatic mental breakdown.

The mind is a terrible thing... ;P

I disagree because it is a relaxation activity. It can't make us crazy if we have a time schedule,

This is an excellent story. I posted this as well. I think our dependency on gadgets is making us into crazy people. I know people of all ages who are addicted to their phones. And the schools are enabling this by allowing students to distract themselves with these internet devices. Technology is a good servant but a bad master.

I read the article in Newsweek and I agree. But the article was about more than just the Internet. It was about all of the electronic means to be connected.

The average teen, for example, processes 3,700 texts a month. 1/3 of Smartphone users go online before getting out of bed.

The brains of Internet Addicts scan much like the brains of drug and alcohol addicts.

Definitely - but it's also given us a deeper level of communication than humanity has ever known. We are connecting on a level as yet unseen in human history and it's such an exciting time to be alive ....even if we're all going to be zombified and insane at the end!

The only ones being driven crazy by the internet are the politicians. They hate having all that info available to the masses. The masses they would rather keep ignorant and uninformed (and misinformed).

I don't know if I'd go that far but it's definitely dumbing down America, I mean if its on the internet it has to be true right?

a lot of people who go on the internet are actually already lonely and depressed and have no social life. That's where "forever alone" comes from.

It just depends on the person ;-)

It only enables us to enhance our tendencies as it provides information at a quicker rate.

It would be much better off in my opinion......the internet and smart phones have really dumbed down society in general........many can't even do simple math without consulting their smart phone or computer......just my opinion..........

I would have to agree. The only thing I use the internet for is work, and using SodaHead and Facebook to stay in touch with friends and family who live far away. I can't stand smart phones too. I have a feeling if those shut down, people will go crazy too. All I need my phone to do is call, text, and take a picture. Nothing else. I don't need all fancy apps, and internet.

There is no substitution for real human contact. The inernet has also made life easier for those who prey on others.

I agree only to the extent a lot of folks just don't handle the new technology very well. And get too wrapped up in it. For me, I view the Internet as nothing more than a useful tool. For example, of recently, I'm taking up photography as a hobby.
The Internet is full of useful information on that subject. ....and will be a refreshing change from my other hobby of fixing computers....

I think its the cause of ADD, your getting so much information that when your not on l'ordinateur your fidgeting (phys. or ment.) because your not used to having such low stimuli and your looking for the information that you find valuable anyway.

Actually I believe that the Internet is actually instilling a sense of fearlessness in us, but not in a good way. Internet Anonymity has given everyone the idea that there are no rules, and no consequences to their actions.

Its definitely going to create new problems, but with all good things in life we have to learn about problems.
Just use it in moderation and you will be fine, dont try and get the internet shut down or else you will have a problem, a going backwards problem.

It's all about personal choices. For one Russell could have easily done what he did via news on the television, TV programs, news papers and magazines. Instead of obsessing on the net he would obsess on these things when his stories came out. That's just my two cents. Not a lot, but something.
