The Green Lantern Is Gay: Cute or Controversial?

DC Comics has been promising to reveal that one of its more popular superheroes is gay, and they finally made the announcement: It's the Green Lantern. Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, is being reintroduced as a homosexual character in the second issue of the "Earth 2" series, part of a recent project designed to revive classic characters called "New 52."

Writer James Robinson explained, "[Scott's] still the same dynamic, heroic guy he was. He's still the head of a media empire like he was in his prior version, but of course with the form of media changing and evolving with the times. And in many ways, his origin mirrors the original one also. Alan’s sexuality is just one facet of him, along with his innate goodness, valor, charisma and skill at leadership that makes him the perfect man to wield the power of the green light in the world of Earth 2." So what do you think? Is the Green Lantern being gay a cute idea, or too controversial?

Alan Scott has been straight and married since his introduction in what, the 30's and 40's. And now they make him Gay! If DC wants a gay character introduce someone new and dont fool with someone with that much History.

All they are trying to do any way is keep up with Marvel and their gay characters getting married.

It'll MAYBE get an additional 5,000 copies sold, but in the end, Hollywood won't buy a gay superhero for a $70,000,000 blockbuster movie

Eh - I dunno - I don't have a problem with gay people at all - what two consenting adults do is no one elses business and they should have the same rights as everyone else - but, in all honesty, I guess I have some stereotypes. I think of gay people as being feminine males - to me that just doesn't go hand in hand with superhuman physical strength - and I think kids gravitate toward superheroes - I don't know that I would want my son admiring and emulating a gay person as a hero. I know my son loved to watch batman and the power rangers when he was a kid..he would try and act just like them...if this green lantern character acts effeminate and kisses guys and he is the hero - young boys will be confused and try to emulate them. I guess it's good for kids who know they are gay at a young age to have a hero - but, other than that - I just don't know.

More than likely this decision to "force" anything upon you was made by heterosexuals. And again, how are you being "forced on" right now?

Is Green Lantern forcing you to read his comic? No.
    Is anyone else? No.

James Robinson, the man behind this, is engaged to Jann Jones - a woman. Also of note is that prior to this, the older version of the character has a gay son.

Because this version is too young to have a son, the decision was made to make him gay.

Next time you decide to say gays are forcing something on you, make sure they are gay first.

The creator made him gay and that is his choice. No one is forcing you to read the comic or accept the character. Maybe I'm tried of all of the straight and WHITE and MALE superheroes and want to see something different. Have you ever thought about people other than yourself and what they might want to read about? It was the same with all of the whiners about Black spiderman.

The creator did not choose to make him gay, the writer did. I'm pretty sure the creators of this character are rolling over in their graves.

Let me be clear, I could care less if a super hero (or anyone else) is gay or not. However considering how many people still discriminate against homosexuality, I'm sure there will be plenty of controversy surrounding this "change" in sexual preference.

I'm sure lots of people will be offended, so I checked "Controversial". I, personally, don't care what cartoon characters sexual preferences are, especially since they only exist in comic books, movies and TV shows, and I think it's totally absurd. I don't want to have to think about whether Sponge Bob Square Pants prefers one thing or the other. He's a SPONGE!!! I don't care what people's sexual preferences are. I would like to get to know someone without having to go into what they do in the bedroom or other room of their choice. It's ludicrous.

i know that the new batwoman is a lesbian not the original one.. but they made a new one .
all im saying is why not make a new super green lantern that is gay and not to change the old green lantern aka Alan Scott into one.

hell they made a NEW batwoman..
.this batwomen is new, different character ,different story line.and they left the old one the same

Yeah, but that was because the old Batwoman was dropped a long time ago. This isn't a fair comparison. Batwoman might have first been conceived in the 40s as a straight woman but the title of Batwoman went unused until the series 52. The title of Green Lantern has been used all along. Also, while the original Batwoman was wiped from continuity by Crisis, Alan Scott's Green Lantern would still be present in the New 52 because of his starring in the Earth 2 series.

This is a Green Lantern from the modern times. It's not the same one, and apparently the gay one's just one of many Green Lanterns. Also, as the above person pointed out, a Batwoman is a lesbian.

But as he said, they made a new Batwoman for this, they didn't rework an existing character.

Except that Peter had already chosen Gwen, and she was killed off, pretty much, because the only step left to their relationship was marriage, and that would make him totally unrelateable as a character to kids. */sarcasm* That reasoning annoyed me, especially since he later married MJ.

Now Wonder Woman's kinky adventures back in the 1940s would've been a much bigger seller if little boys back then weren't so self conscious about buying a "girls' comic".

I hate when they can't get the movies right, let alone abandon the history, the storyline, and the fanbase of a huge group of fans.
