The Green Lantern Is Gay: Cute or Controversial?

DC Comics has been promising to reveal that one of its more popular superheroes is gay, and they finally made the announcement: It's the Green Lantern. Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, is being reintroduced as a homosexual character in the second issue of the "Earth 2" series, part of a recent project designed to revive classic characters called "New 52."

Writer James Robinson explained, "[Scott's] still the same dynamic, heroic guy he was. He's still the head of a media empire like he was in his prior version, but of course with the form of media changing and evolving with the times. And in many ways, his origin mirrors the original one also. Alan’s sexuality is just one facet of him, along with his innate goodness, valor, charisma and skill at leadership that makes him the perfect man to wield the power of the green light in the world of Earth 2." So what do you think? Is the Green Lantern being gay a cute idea, or too controversial?

Alan Scott has been straight and married since his introduction in what, the 30's and 40's. And now they make him Gay! If DC wants a gay character introduce someone new and dont fool with someone with that much History.

All they are trying to do any way is keep up with Marvel and their gay characters getting married.

Yes, they actually are the real representations, because Earth-2 is the "real" Earth of those "Golden Age" characters, such as the Jay Garrick Flash, the Archeologist Hawkman, Hourman, Alan Scott Green Lantern, etc. because the Crises didn't happen to join all of the Earths. Instead, they went back to all the Golden Age people being on Earth-2.

I wouldn't call it controversial, or cute. I think it's great that they're introducing more gay characters, but why the Green Lantern? Why not make another gay character instead of suddenly making a household hero gay? It just seems a little sudden, that's all.

It's flat out stupid. Just like rewriting someone else's origins to fit the mold they are looking to appease. After reading so many opinions I too wondered about his son, on top of that since I haven't read this comic will that make his son completely null and void as well. In other words not only do they get rid of what could have been an iconic gay character but make him dissappear completely like he never existed. Just pathetic and as far as not sure how to bring Obsidion back does anyone remember the 90's when superman died pppuuhhhhlease!!!!!! All because Marvel is kicking their collective butt right now they make crazy crap up as a way to drum up scandal for business!!

I'm not against gays but it just seems wierd to me that the Green Lantern would be gay. Why not just create a new super hero?

Super heroes are not what they use to be. They use to stand for something higher than our human standards, now they are just like the rest of us who are not super at all. Reading comics these days is like looking at a porno magazine... don't let your kids read them, they are pure filth.

I'm just curious, would you be saying the same thing if he was kissing a woman? Or is it the kissing in general that's the problem?

Examples, you can search: "Batman Catwoman sex," without the quotation marks and get an example of such a scene.

I look forward to seeing a homosexual hero, it can change cinema forever.

It's just totally flat out and dumb...

For one thing, they took an EARTH TWO character and made him gay, not a super huge and popular one... that's not really that provocative

Secondly, Alan Scott has been around for 72 years, that's even longer than Hal Jordan, Spider-Man and even Captain America... all those years of comics, he's had TWO wives... and now they're just not even gonna exist... 72 years? They don't mean anything now

Its a diabolical agenda task from the protocols of zion. REAL SUPERHEROES love, adore, and rescue women. Real superheroes want to make love to women with all their superhero might. Superheroes that are quir infected fruity pants, don't set right with me.

And yet they have rescued men. Wonder Woman commonly would save Steve Trevor, rather like Superman saving Lois Lane.

Does the "gay" issue have to be injected in every sector of entertainment? I don't care what people, especially imaginary people, do in private. This is just a scan to sell stuff. I am so sick and tired of this being imposed on us by folks in the entertainment industry. Are they so desperate for sales that they will resort to anything to get headlines? It's a cheap attempt. BTW, Neil Patrick Harris is talented and funny. It doesn't matter one way or the other than he's gay. Ellen Degeneres used to be funny before she felt like being gay first and funny second. Dane Cook is not gay, but he's not funny. Jim Gaffigan is straight, father of four and hilarious. Can we please stop trying to push this because frankly I am sick and tired of it.

Actually the push within the gay community for her to come out destroyed her sitcom. And she does push it, although in a more subtle way than some.

Don't know what you've been watching, because that definitely doesn't happen much. She might make a little joke every once in a while, but that's all it is. She doesn't push her opinion on anyone, she just makes jokes. Which, as a comedian, is her job.
