The Green Lantern Is Gay: Cute or Controversial?

DC Comics has been promising to reveal that one of its more popular superheroes is gay, and they finally made the announcement: It's the Green Lantern. Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, is being reintroduced as a homosexual character in the second issue of the "Earth 2" series, part of a recent project designed to revive classic characters called "New 52."

Writer James Robinson explained, "[Scott's] still the same dynamic, heroic guy he was. He's still the head of a media empire like he was in his prior version, but of course with the form of media changing and evolving with the times. And in many ways, his origin mirrors the original one also. Alan’s sexuality is just one facet of him, along with his innate goodness, valor, charisma and skill at leadership that makes him the perfect man to wield the power of the green light in the world of Earth 2." So what do you think? Is the Green Lantern being gay a cute idea, or too controversial?

Alan Scott has been straight and married since his introduction in what, the 30's and 40's. And now they make him Gay! If DC wants a gay character introduce someone new and dont fool with someone with that much History.

All they are trying to do any way is keep up with Marvel and their gay characters getting married.

I still take issue with the loss of Jennie and Todd. Hopefully DC will get their heads out of their butts and go back to what they were. I want my Wall back. T-T

Considering DC killed of LIAN in one of the continuities. and Roy is missing an arm...
  • GLaDOS Arianne 2012/06/05 19:55:48
    GLaDOS
I'm pretty sure Roy has his arm back, though I thought that was a pretty cool story, that they kept him that way, same with Oracle being... well, Oracle, and not Batgirl, anymore, with none of that, "Bitch got shot, bitch got better," silliness.

I thought the death of Lian was a good story point. Death, is really a good story point. Adds drama, happens, all that.

True except I was actually a pretty big Lian fan. So I'm a bit biased in that.

Well that's an alright attitude to take. It shows that you have some taste, and respect for what comics are. On a personal level though? I don't like this decision among many others that GLaDOS has already listed. (I think my biggest issue is actually Superman's new Bio-tech suit...god that is just a travesty.) Because of those I just won't spend my money on their comics...not until they put out stories worth reading anyway. Maybe that makes me a snob, but it's how I feel about it.

I think I can understand where you're coming from. I don't read much of anything either unless it has a proper storyline.

And I absolutely agree with you on that bio-tech suit...ugh. Now that is tragic.

Lame attempt to get attention because marvel is shining so bright. Marvel had many gay characters and nobody made a fuss. Mystic, Rogue, Angel, and several others were gay or bi for at one point. Big yawn for D.C.

Mystique. And when Colossus was made gay, there was some geek uproar about it.

O_o When the heck was Rogue or Angel gay or bi?

Yes, there are, currently, five. Alan Scott, the Golden Age Green Lantern, who they have turned gay, who lives on Earth-2 with all of the other Golden Age heroes, and isn't a member of the Green Lantern Corps. And the four on Earth-1 who are members of the Green Lantern Corps (Hal Jordan, the one you were thinking, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, and Kyle Rayner).

The original one fashioned the ring himself. It doesn't need the lantern to regen. He liked women too. I guess they forgot those issues when they had him step out of the closet.

It's not the fact he is gay. It is the fact that they changed his whole story now. I would have been fine with a new superhero.

In an anti-white destroying white populations globally which is genocide kind of way.

Mass immigration,"assimilation",homo and other deviant propaganda pushed and wholesomeness debased ONLY in white countries.

    Anti-racist is a code word for anti-white.

    Why not?

Superheroes should represent all various types of people, and showcase their virtues and vices in a way that speaks to the reader -- a gay superhero should be no different.

It would be nice if they actually made a gay superhero, instead of changing an established one without so much as a "Hmm, I might be gay" about it, and erasing his children (a daughter, and gay son), wife, and history.

It's a comic alternate universe. I don't think this is uncommon.

In X-Men, for example, I know there a multiple universes, some where some characters are married, aren't together anymore, or are dead. I don't see this as "changing" the character, but as writing the same character in a different story.
  • GLaDOS Epistem... 2012/06/14 07:54:33

Sadly, this is the "main" universe for the golden oldies. And the New 52 is the DC Universe, at the moment. Hopefully, you're right, and the writers, and editors come to their senses, and just say the New 52 was all a bad dream, but, they've already stated that the New 52 is here to stay... hopefully not.

Ugh....Stupid SH and your damn jumping screens...

First of all, do your homework SH Hal Jordan was the original Green Lantern.

This is so not cute at all, what's cute about a gay superhero? What's cute about a gay couple? Hell what's cute about a straight couple?

Now why are they going to reboot his character like this? I find it so stupid and sad that they're going to throw away all of the life stories that Scott has gone through for the sake of appealing to gay audiences. If anything they're going to ruin the fandom because it's like the fans won't know who this guy is anymore.

    The idea is pretty lame.
  • GLaDOS sally 2012/06/05 05:59:24

No, Hal Jordan was not the original Green Lantern. He was the original Green Lantern Corps. member in 1959. The original Green Lantern was Alan Scott, from 1940.

it's an alternate universe; the characters are portrayed differently but aren't in anyway the REAL representations of who they really are

    not a big deal.
