DC Comics has been promising to reveal that one of its more popular superheroes is gay, and they finally made the announcement: It's the Green Lantern. Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, is being reintroduced as a homosexual character in the second issue of the "Earth 2" series, part of a recent project designed to revive classic characters called "New 52."

Writer James Robinson explained, "[Scott's] still the same dynamic, heroic guy he was. He's still the head of a media empire like he was in his prior version, but of course with the form of media changing and evolving with the times. And in many ways, his origin mirrors the original one also. Alan’s sexuality is just one facet of him, along with his innate goodness, valor, charisma and skill at leadership that makes him the perfect man to wield the power of the green light in the world of Earth 2." So what do you think? Is the Green Lantern being gay a cute idea, or too controversial?

Alan Scott has been straight and married since his introduction in what, the 30's and 40's. And now they make him Gay! If DC wants a gay character introduce someone new and dont fool with someone with that much History.

All they are trying to do any way is keep up with Marvel and their gay characters getting married.

This could be good. I actually prefer JSA to JLA especially when they had Superman on the team. But it's kind of unfortunate that they picked a character whose old weakness was wood to do this to. The jokes write themselves.

I read comics and collected them because my heroes and heroines were HEROIC. They didn't have flaws (save for their "kryptonite") and were able to overcome any adversity. They didn't get sick or thirsty, they didn't fall and break a leg, they overcame all and were heroes. When comics began to reflect the same problems I had in my life they became so much less interesting!

Yes but that is because of the unwritten law of female hero uniforms, the more powerful the woman the skimpier the costume. Some become so small real people would have "wardrobe malfunctions" or at least chaffing in inconvenient places.

Doesn't bother me in the least.

I will say that it IS too coincidental that Marvel just passed this way...also, the original had a wife and kids, but then in those days he wasn't able to come out of the closet without a lot of trouble so....no problem.

He wasn't originally gay, his son was. The only reason they made him gay was because they got rid of his son.

Actually, there should be a "Doesn't Matter" check box (but Controversial is apt), too much "Black & White" extemism is dangerous, no Middle Ground. It'd be a Better World if the Moderates held Power rather than the Fanatics who keep grinding axes & perpetuating inane & trite Blood Fueds & Old Scores.

Um, yeah. There are fanatics on both sides of the straight aisle. How many people have had PFLAGistas go after them? How many agencies and organizations etc., have been attacked by PFLAGistas for daring to have an opinion in favor of being straight? The answer is a lot, but that isn't what makes the news.

Yes, both Obsidian and Jade were important, and well-liked, characters. His son was gay, and that's the only reason they made Alan Scott gay, to "make up" for the loss of Todd.

Being well-liked doesn't matter, really.
Is it proven that the reason they made Alan Scott gay was to make up for the loss of Todd? Is it a sustainable fact?
