The Fourth Branch of Government

I had the thought not too long ago that the media is almost like the fourth branch of government. They tell people what to think, spin policy to get people to agree or disagree with a proposal, and keep the public from knowledge they don't want them to have. The president meets with the media about as often, if not more often than he meets with any other branch of government. I was just wondering if any of you thought I was on the right track.

Currently the Right has far more of this going on than the Left does, as far as media outlets go, but the left is starting to catch up. I mean there is a definite right wing media powerhouse in this country and you can tell all over this site that these people are getting their ideas and talking points from it. You can always tell when the right wing media comes up with a new talking point, it will be in every poll on this site within two hours.
