MCCLATCHYDC.COM reports:
After nearly a decade of warnings that the world’s oil supply was running out, Americans now are hearing about technology breakthroughs that can unlock vast U.S. deposits of natural gas, help reverse a 40-year slide in domestic oil production and perhaps transform America into the next Middle East. But despite the euphoria, there’s a major problem: The looming American oil glut may simply not be enough to sate the United States and the rest of motorized humanity.

I can not believe that anyone is stupid enough to think that it is not after all the world uses so much of the stuff on a daily bases. You can close your eyes and pretend its not happing all you like (as many people do on this site) After all why do you think the USA went to war with Iraq. There will be a lot more wars like that fought over oil to come in the coming century. The worlds hooked on oil and we don't have a another fuel source to replace it with for when it starts running low and what is worse is that world governments don't really seem to care. The trouble with most humans is that they live for today and don't care about tomorrow. I guess the the other reason why most humans do not acknowledge there is a problem is the world is addicted to it so it is better to turn a blind eye than face the truth. Silly humans.

The world's oil supply is not running out. Technology breakthroughs are happening at a mind numbing pace. The main change of technological philosophy is summed up very simply, super-conductivity. That allows us to do all kinds of things not imaginable a decade ago. It doesn't take 200 horsepower to drive a car anymore. However, it will take a while to figure out how it will move people most efficiently. We've got some of it figured out, but it's still cost-prohibitive. Once we get that part figured out, oil is toast.

Not really true. Oil as a energy source ( combustion ) will slowly be used less and less for many forms of power ...but by that time the planets population will 10 to 12 Billion people and growing.
The many many by products of the oil industry and related petrochemical industries will sustain a healthy Oil and Natural Gas Industry and the related petrochemical industries.
Besides the technology you speak of can not exist without the by products of the oil industry.
All the green technology is interdependant on the oil and natural gas industries and the petrochemical industries as one feeds off the other as the new green technologies do develope.
    Oil is here to stay.
If we figure out how to burn ( combust ) the oil and natural gas 100 % efficient and pollution free then why not keep on using it as a power based resource.
It is the pollution that everyone is concerned about so the focus should be how to burn the substances with 100 % efficiency and no pollution.
I am certain we can achieve that.

Once the oil is gone, it's gone. We might have enough left for decades or even a century but it's definitely running out. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a crackpot.

Fossil fuels take millions of years to form from the decay of dead organisms. Maybe you should know what you're talking about.

yes and they are in continual decay..from millions of years..to present day....
so in other words we have a continual supply chain..of carbon based products decaying every minute....grasshopper...

Yes, but we don't have millions of years left for our oil supply to run out. It will run out soon, sooner than us short-sighted humans would like to imagine. Decay might be happening everyday but not at a rate to replenish it at the rate at which we consume it daily.
  • tom C die Küs... 2012/08/15 20:02:19 (edited)
    tom C
how do you know that? show me the actual numbers....
,,What is the actual amount of carbon based material decaying on the planet everyday? you dont know...so dont guess...

your original comment is what caught my eye...
"""Once the oil is gone, it's gone"" that is simply not true...as new oil is created every day...unless...the earth dies...and stops decaying..

Oil is at its end, not because of shortage but from over pricing from greed. We see Greed for money in all walks of life, both political parties are spending billions on lying campaigns, this will have a bitter taste once the people start to realize we can not continue this inflation!!!!

For every dollar Exxon oil makes for it's shareholders it pays $3 to government taxes.
Jobs, critical infrasturcture and national defense are 3 good reasons to keep the oil flowing here in America.
  • Old Geecer Michaelene 2012/08/16 16:33:56

So, you think that it is OK for Giant oil Corporations to be the middleman to collect tax money for the Government? Maybe we should be charged $10 per Gallon to pay off our deficit, there are 100's of everyday commodity that has hidden Tax added to it and as long as the Government is spending money to fuel corruption this taxation will continue to get larger. It does not matter which Parties is in the White House because their Greed for more money are both the same. We The People can not change this "Greed Machine", but "time" will change it for us all! Nobody has the answer to how we can get out of this deficit without getting hurt!

I would love if you accepted how much money our POTUS has given to other nation's nationalized oil industries for the benefit of his friend George Soros. Billions of dollars, permits and billions in equipment to bankroll his Petrobras oil company.
What did we get in return? Nothing

Like I said, our nation would suffer if these companies did not pay the large amounts of taxes they pay. We would have no safe roads without the gas tax that we all pay (which is a majority of the cost per gallon). There is no free ride.

It is going to hurt to get out of debt. My family has gotten out of debt and it was only through sacrificing the wants we have and focusing only on the needs. No vacations, no pizza, no new clothes, no luxury items like handbags and perfume and lots of spaghetti dinners. Was it worth it? Absolutely.

I know people in O&G; and have been told that the fact is the reserves of Oil Gas and coal can provide us with energy for well over the next 500-1000 years.

Coal, Natural gas, and oil, are essentially interchangeable with the magic of some chemical processing or retrofitting of vehicles and plants.

The goal of energy should be H2 or fusion, but in the interim we need all comers to reach that goal. Until the "sustainable stuff" can stand on it's own economically and provide the same level of efficiency as a ton of coal, a Therm of NG or a gallon of gas, these sustainable notions such as Ethanol are a waste of money.

example for each unit of Ethanol it take 2-3 units of equivalent energy to produce.

Solar is not even @ 10 percent efficiency, and the notion of electric vehicles is predicated on getting minerals from areas where political conflict exists.

Drill Here, Drill Now. Dig Here, Dig Now. Get the EPA out of the way of picking winners and losers.

I agree 100%. It makes you wonder why Obama's EPA would want to "crucify" these industries (oil, coal and natural gas and use our food for fuel (especially during a drought)

Michaelene, I rarely mince words. I do believe Mr Obama's diliberate actions against coal, oil and gas is emotionally based, First, I do believe he has disdain for the USA.
His EPA chief Lisa Jackson has been involved in the far left environmental movement, and has a bone to pick with people who paid her tuition at Tulane. (Shell Oil).
She typifies the current environmental movement. I tend to see their goal is economic collapse of the US ...

Check out the Y2Y Project, it is an attempt by these people to get land via eminent domain as a green corridor from the Yukon to Yellowstone.

the influence of the Friends of Earth, Environmental Liberation Front etc, are present in personnel in our EPA.

That's the truth, I've dropped the ball on him as have so many with all the crap to distract us.

This is so very important because the refineries are all on egg shells, even the loss of one could cause a crisis and it will never be on television.
A crisis happened in May 2012, it resulted in that insane new business venture of Delta Airlines, buying an oil refinery. Why? to secure guaranteed jet fuel.
This purchase has boggled the minds of most business advisors and analysts.

It resulted in a hearing from the NHS committees of national defense and of critical infrastructure and is in the library of Congress. Both committes stated that further hearings were needed and they were shown on cspan the same day as the Holder contempt hearing.

Delta knows that there was no jet fuel on the east coast for 4 days, it was trucked in, railed and shipped in to keep Philly and NYC (both airports) running. Only 1 refinery processes jet fuel from the virgin islands to Conneticut!
