the term extinct corresponds to several criteria: number surviving in the wild, loss of habitat, health of gene pool etc. Cheetahs don't breed well in zoos and most surviving cheetahs are in zoos or game reserves where they are curtailed. There is quite a bit of talk about cheetahs recently being de facto extinct. The NY times has something on it today also.

Don't be giving up yet. Our zoos have many programs where we get in animals from other countries for breeding purposes. I imagine your zoos are doing the same.

there have been several recent articles about cheetahs recently. Even today I saw one on the NY times website.

UN/zoos. Severely depleted gene pool, loss of habitat, poaching, difficulty in breeding them in zoos. etc. Once animals cross a line in terms of genepool, habitat etc. they go from severely endangered to "de facto extinct" meaning there might be some in zoos and a few in the wild, but the damage is done to the stage that they are deemed "irrecoverable" as a species.

The Asiatic Cheetah is critically endangered and extinct in India. Only about 100 exist.

12,300. Most of them are in zoos. Their habitat is either gone or dangerous to them (they are hunted for their skins). In other words, put them all back in the wild and they'll be extinct even quicker. But in terms of gene pool they are effectively: extinct.

I don;t know. Maybe not yet. But, they have a very shallow gene pool and probably won't be able to be saved...it is sad.

Do You find it mildly ironic that you put an extinction post in the living section?

There isn't anything anyone can do to get the worlds remaining Cheetah population to reproduce?

where? most cheetahs live in zoos. Their gene pool is so depleted that the UN has declared them as severely endangered/de facto extinct.

Don't worry, we can rebuild them, we're close to the technology anyway

there's only 12K in the world. Many of them live in zoos. Their habitat is squandered. Basically, according to the UN they are de facto extinct. The gene pool is so depleted.

They're not extinct until every last one is dead >.>
