The Bra-Top Trend: Sexy or TMI?

We recently told you about how Selena Gomez and Katy Perry both wore similar two-piece outfits at the Kids' Choice Awards. Turns out, it wasn't really a coincidence. The bra top is a trend for spring -- Miuccia Prada even sent it down her spring runway. And a writer for Elle is skittish about the look.

"Just as Miuccia and I were getting along, those tops threw me for a loop," says the Elle writer. "They were so…cropped...And Mrs. Prada wasn’t the only one daring us to bare -- some portion of the midriff was on display on the runways of Donna Karan, Nina Ricci, Proenza Schouler, and Jason Wu, too."

Dare we say it, these new bra tops (meant to be worn in lieu of an actual shirt) are somewhat tasteful -- if you have flat, six-pack abs. But the Elle writer still finds the notion of exposing her midriff "universally terrifying." The look is the latest incarnation of the belly-baring top, kicked off by "I Dream of Jeannie," perfected by the Madonna in the '80s and popular all over again in the '90s (baby tees).

But this season's crop top is paired with "high-waisted skirts, ladylike cardigans, and dainty shorts," according to Elle, making them "downright classy." Do you think real women should wear "bra tops" ... in public?

It sure looks fabulous on these woman. Really, revealing clothing is nothing new. It's been going on for years. I dressed similar when I was young because it was fashionable. I sure can't go whining about what kids are wearing these days. I can however, be jealous that I could never pull this off now.

Though as always there is a disclaimer. Don't wear them if you don't have the body for it. Everyone has different assets and different less attractive areas. Just because the girl who lives in the gym looks sexy in a crop top doesn't mean everyone does. If you have the body, by all means, flaunt it. Just remember where and when they're appropriate.
Summer at the amusement park with friends=good
Eating at an upscale restaurant or going to a funeral=bad

This isn't a new style. It showed up in fashion magazines in the '30's and 40's of the last century. Even my mother had a couple of outfits like this (Gasp!)

I remember seeing that type of clothing in old films 'TMI', there's a very famous saying that goes, "Everything old is new again", and it looks like their correct only in our case it gets skimpier.

I have always found that less is more intriguing and much classier. I do, however, believe they have the right to wear them; if they have the body for it...heaven protect me from looking at a very over weight person in spandex or a very small outfit. I am about 20 pounds over my best weight and would not even consider those outfits.

Those are the most ugly outfits since the hoop skirts of the Victorian period. It makes them look bottom heavy and there is nothing uglier than bare shoulders, unless there is a lot of long hair covering them.
