Hazel Green Herald
March - 1902
Douglas Evans, the mail carrier between Campton and Torrent, one day last week, when about half way between the former and the latter place, was attacked by a bear and compelled to dismount from his horse and climb a tree. But bruin was soon ascending the tree after him with at an alarming speed and agility, and it seemed likely that Uncle Sam's carrier would make a dinner for the bear, but Evans just then remembered the forty-five in his belt, which he had forgotten until then. A shot from the big gun tumbled the ferocious beast to the ground dead.
