Just what we needed -- a bunch of college kids walking around with concealed handguns.
On Monday, the Texas Senate approved a bill that would allow individuals with concealed handgun licenses to carry weapons in public college buildings and classrooms, Time magazine reports.
Supporters of the bill say carrying guns on campus is a self-defense measure, one that could allow students to retaliate and defend themselves in school shootings like those at Virginia Tech in 2007 and Northern Illinois University in 2008.
But critics, including University of Texas administrators, fear the law could lead to more campus crime and suicides.
If the bill clears the House, Texas Gov. Rick Perry is expected to sign it into law. Would you call this a smart idea, or a very stupid one?

The "college kids" would have to be at least 21 to obtain the concealed carry permit and to have been vetted and trained according to state statute. Can we say "knee-jerk reaction," everyone?

The risk of misuse > the chance of them being handy in an event like Virginia Tech.
Also, it makes it easier for guns to end up on the black market.
Easier to use them as murder/crime weapons.
Easier to use them for suicide.
Easier to use them to threaten other students/people in general.
It just seems like a silly thing to do.
And if they had been, the body count would have been one, maybe 2. The shooter and the first person he shot. Tell me again why 1 or 2 dead is worse than 33?
You completely took what I said out of context.
I said the chance of their misuse was higher than the chance of another even like Virginia Tech happening and the gun being useful.
In reality, what I said is much more likely.
The guns being stolen, used for crimes and suicides, and for threating others is more likely to happen that another Virgina Tech.
Sure, they may be handy in the event it does happen, but there can be things implemented the stop that which do not involve allowing everyone with a gun license to carry a weapon.
29 years in a town where everyone is REQUIRED to own a gun. Not one person killed with one. No murders, no suicides, no accidental deaths, no self defense killings, nothing
Nothing is safer than an area where everyone is armed.
This is only some. On a campus of people that are mostly between 18-22.
I still maintain that it is a silly option.
Though, I do come from a country that doesn't think guns are an important part of daily life, like most Americans do.
Also, there was no FATAL shots in the town. So there were still shots.
Before you bring it up, same thing with Mexico.
Also they aren't kids. They are over 21.
Furthermore, these are college students; in other words, ADULTS. Not kids.
I just imagine some people getting angry and in the heat of the moment use it on someone.
We shall see how it works out for them now that this bill is passed.
More suicides? I don't think so. If people wanted to kill themselves there's plenty of other ways to without a gun.
