Teen Marijuana Use on the Rise: Dangerous Trend or Not a Big Deal?

Bad news for parents today. Teen marijuana use is on the rise, with nearly 1 in 10 smoking weed at least 20 or more times a month (up from 5 percent in 2008), according to a new survey, The Associated Press reports.

teens pot

According to the report by The Partnership at Drugfree.org, released Wednesday, use of "hard" drugs like cocaine and methamphetamine has stabilized in recent years, and abuse of prescription meds may be slowing down among high school kids. But past-month usage of marijuana grew from 19 percent in 2008 to 27 percent last year.

“Parents are talking about cocaine and heroin, things that scare them," Partnership President Steve Pasierb told the AP. "Parents are not talking about prescription drugs and marijuana. They can't wink and nod. They need to be stressing the message that this behavior is unhealthy."

Another scary stat: Teens who smoked pot 20 times or more a month were almost twice as likely as kids who used marijuana less frequently to use ecstasy, cocaine or crack. Do you think teen pot-smokers are headed in a dangerous direction?

I would honestly rather have kids doing weed than drinking alcohol or smoking tobacco.

Sure I would prefer they didn't do all of these things but when you look at the alternatives kids that want to get high really bad probably will, and if it's not marijuana it will probably be something dangerous. Whether that means drinking hand sanitizer, sniffing glue or markers, or choking themselves, it's probably worse than marijuana.

Also marijuana is less addictive then drugs like nicotine, alcohol, or caffeine, and it doesn't typically result in the irresponsibility that alcohol does. So it really does seem like the lesser of all evils in this case.

The crazy (really) thing is, they advertise prescription drugs, and then admit that possible side effects include heart attack, stroke, death, suicide, and some serious stuff. OR how about that guy who had a cigarette and his feet fell off, OR the LSD scam. the bodies are still falling..

If drugs were legal this would be no bigger than smoking tobacco or drinking alcohol, in any event is up to the parents.

Im not against smoking pot but im concerned on whats added to it to increase the buzz.
I smoked it back in the 70s-80s and i did like the high from it.I have also smoked it from time to time there after and the buzz i get from it is very different.
Maybe its because im getting older ..i dont know.

Then you should support legalization, so reputable businesses can produce it, that way drug dealers can't lace cannabis with dangerous chemicals or other drugs. If it were regulated and sold like alcohol, cannabis would be much safer and natural to use. Cannabis itself is safer than Aspirin... much safer... the only thing that makes it dangerous is it's illegality, it's black market distribution, etc... That's the "gateway"... your drug dealer pushing crack on you... when you buy a beer at a liquor shop when have they ever pushed heroin on you?
  • Jannis Chris 2012/05/04 02:41:24

Thats true Chris, but i dont think that it would become a reputable business.
I like to get high, but i dont think that legalizing it would keep those from treating it with harmful drugs will vanish...:)

It already did happen with medical cannabis... perfectly legal, safe, respectable businesses selling a product to people in a professional manner. Why wouldn't it be possible with recreational cannabis? As long as you have regulations, business licenses, etc.... you'll have professional businesses selling it. There is an overwhelming demand for cannabis, so people wanting to grow and sell marijuana in a professional manner will have more business than Starbucks.

What we have NOW is disgusting, hundreds of thousands of Americans having their lives ruined by prohibition, thousands of Mexicans being killed... Look at the enviornment it is in now, in a legal one, no one would be killed, no more horrifically violent crimes.

It's terrible... you really don't realize how deadly that is until you're older and then think, "what in the world are they thinking!?" But when I was a teen I huffed gasoline, spray paint and air freshener to expand my mind... until I met a dealer and just used cannabis from that point on. And I'm not like a pothead or anything, I usually brew it as a tea occasionally and just enjoy the relaxing effects.

I think is not a big deal, as long as the parents talk to their kids and find the reason why they want to premeditate, maybe they are missing something, like a dream to reach for.
Or maybe they have so much stress at home that they want to fill relax for a moment and if they do smoke cannabis they have to be responsible, to not over do it. I will say is better then Alcohol and cigarettes this are the actual probed, killers.

We're not talking about cigarettes... I agree tobacco kills millions of people annually worldwide.... but cannabis kills none, it's safer than Aspirin.
  • vinone Chris 2012/05/04 02:46:15

Most smoke it, so it would still fall under no smoking, which inhaling anything into your lungs is bad for you, even marijuana.
  • Chris vinone 2012/05/04 04:38:10 (edited)
    Chris
    That picture is a cigarette.

Even with a filter a joint has a fatter tip usually.
    cannabis joint

And smoking cannabis has anti-cancer properties. The only way smoking cannabis is unhealthy is it'll make your lungs dirty, but that's their decision to use it in that manner. I never smoke it though.. I usually consume it as a tea with honey and hibiscus... the effects are just relaxing and nice... not as bad as being drunk.
  • vinone Chris 2012/05/04 13:21:42
    vinone
I know what a joint looks like, and I know what the picture was, I was just trying to make the point that smoking anything is bad for you, and I've smoked a joint that was made to look like a cigarette.

I know you can consume it in many different ways, but as I said, most smoke it, which isn't healthy.
  • Chris vinone 2012/05/05 02:32:08
    Chris
No it's not healthy, but it won't kill you either... drinking coffee isn't healthy either, in fact coffee kills more people than cannabis... so I'm sure you must be REALLY against coffee if you're against cannabis.

Wrong. Weed makes you stupid, lazy, and paranoid, especially in large amounts. In moderation it is less harmful.
