Talking Politics in The Workplace: Democracy or Doomsday?

Susan Solovic suggests people do not talk politics in the workplace. However, others argue that we need to talk about politics with whom we spend our days with to keep democracy alive. Silencing or avoiding the important issue of state, local and national politics for 8-10 hours per day limits our democratic vigilance.

Ms. Solovic writes in her blog about the dangers of allowing politics in the office: Local, state and national elections can stir passions and create conflict among your employees or hard-feelings with customers. Political tensions among your team members can damage workplace relationships as well as impact employee performance and productivity. Worse case, you might lose good employees and even customers. To minimize potential problems, many small businesses have created policies to keep partisan politics out of the office.

As long as the "discussions" don't get in the way of office productivity and don't degenerate into personal attacks and namecalling, I think people should be able to talk about whatever they want to talk about. I can understand not wanting employees to spend four hours a day arguing politics, but if they can get their jobs done then why not?

Everyone where I work is either progressive or libertarian- no harm no foul. (We're mostly free-thinkers). We tend to agree on 98% of the same social issues. If someone were to say something hateful- the response would be dead silence. That's what you get when you work with creative, educated and intelligent people.

Politics is discussed often, but it does not predominate conversation. It's not a big deal.

So basically you work with shallow, narrow minded group of people who think just like you....way to assimilate yourself into society. Hahahaha.

We don't have the same beliefs (varying religious views, political, ethical etc), but we agree on most issues. We are also RESPECTFUL and tactful. You're being dramatic. Hah I like where I am just fine if I had to deal with RWNJ everyday I'd go insane. Is that what happened to you?

I think it's a hoot you are so pleased you work in an office surrounded by yourself. How dull and UN-challenging.

I thought Liberals were so big on tolerance and diversity. Of course we both know they are neither. But maybe you can stop goose stepping long enough to realize there is a whole world of people out there who are capable of expanding your narrow world.

Expand your mind, get out of your comfort zone and mingle with people who are not just like you. Hell, you may even learn something!

Your office sounds sort of Stepford Wives to me! Yuck!

Agreeing on 98% of the issues doesn't lead to a political discourse, it leads to a bunch of idiots enforcing their own opinions... but I agree, that IS democracy.

we talk politics at the office a lot.....there's just 3 of us though and we have similiar political leanings. For a larger office, I would say it's probably not a good idea.

I've never seen a positive outcome from talking politics at work. I almost say a cat fight back in 2008 between a female Obama & MC Cain supporter!....and the McCain supporter was the Owner!! She lost all decorum ! I laughed til I cried !

Democracy worked when we were living in bands and tribes. Now a nation of 329 million people, where Democracy means 51% decide what 49% will do, think, live doesn't work. When 49% are unhappy the system is ripe for revolt.

Now i got ya, democracy hater. Bush didn't have 51% of the vote, it was the Supreme Court that gave him the job. So much for that 49/51 red button your trying to push.

Personally I prefer a REPUBLIC rather than MOB RULE which is what a Democracy is... Just so you know the USA is a REPUBLIC based on the rule of LAW... NOT a Democracy... the founding fathers and most really intelligent people know that a DEMOCRACY won't last long and is the quick road to TYRANNY...

Depends on the workplace, that's for sure! I worked in a law office where half the lawyers were Republicans and half Democrats. Funny, their personal staff usually were of the same party affiliation. During election season, politics were banned in the office in order to get work done!

Work is work - it does not involve politics. Politics causes arguments - and work is tough enough - leave it at home.

Great question! It seems like in this day and age, or possibly from my experience on SH, people get too heated when you disagree politically. I think your opinion of each other can change and if you want to keep the peace, keep your thoughts to yourself. I wish it was that we can talk politics and keep the peace but I just don't see it happening.

Again the answer choices could be better. "What democracy"?

Since government rules your lives, certainly it needs to be discussed whenever possible. Many don't have the time and many others seem not to give a crap.

Remember that your employer is paying for your time, so check with your boss.

Overall, I say doomsday. Yeah, there may be the one or two guys who I can talk to about it and keep it civil, but if the wrong people think they disagree with you over your political leanings, you'll likely need to find employment elsewhere.

I'm fairly certain they all disagree with me-and that they all agree with me. :o)

I'm somewhat careful about it. But you just have to know who you're talking to and how to de-emotionalize the conversation. Those who are completely irrational and base all decisions political on emotion are easy to spot and avoid.

Most companies discourage this, many have made policies about it, and for good reason - it is not why you are at work, and no reason to discuss there.
