Taco Bell Launching 'Gourmet' Menu: Weird or Wonderful?

When you think of Taco Bell, you probably think of getting a quick, cheap Mexican food fix, often at, say, 2 in the morning. But the fast-food chain no longer wants to be known as a greasy spoon. To compete with Chipotle (considered a "premium" chain), Taco Bell has launched a new "gourmet" menu -- designed by a TV chef -- that includes fancier ingredients like whole black beans, cilantro rice, fire-roasted corn salsa and pico de gallo. The best part? The new items at Taco Bell are still $5 or less.

Developed by chef Lorena Garcia, who has appeared on NBC's "America's Next Great Restaurant," the new Cantina Bell includes: whole black beans with Mexican spices; cilantro rice with onion, garlic, and parsley; citrus and herb-marinated chicken with tomatillo; new guacamole made with Hass avocados, jalapenos, cilantro and tomatoes; fire-roasted Corn salsa with red and green peppers and spices; creamy cilantro dressing; pico de gallo, diced tomatoes and onions with cilantro, lemon juice and vinegar; vegetarian versions of salad bowls and burritos

The gourmet menu at the fast food chain launches July 5 across the U.S. Will you check out the new eats? Or do you avoid fast-food places like Taco Bell -- even with its added gourmet style?

Sounds delicious. I'll have to try it after it rolls out. In the restaurant business, like any other business, if you aren't moving forward you are falling behind. I applaud Bells initiative.

It's great that more choices are being offered, but isn't "gourmet" a bit of overstatement?!

Just gotta remember, gourmet doesn't necessarily mean good. And Taco Blech is anything but good.

Most gourmet food is really crappy. Oysters, Rocky Mountain oysters, escargot, frog's legs? Blech.

It's a business move, whether it really is better or not will be up to the customers to decide...

I really like Taco Bell and think these new menu ideas are great! I try to avoid fast food (although occasionally like a cheeseburger and fries from McDonald's). Taco Bell's lime drink is really refreshing, I like to go there to get that.

I'll go there for a Baja Blast if I go. It's a version of Mt. Dew sold only at Taco Bell.

I wish there was a Taco Bell in Australia.
All we have is stupid McDonalds, KFC and Hungry Jacks.

It's just Burger King, but legal reasons made them change the name.

Didn't work when McDonald's tried to glam up their food either. Creme brulee? Please. Just give me my Big Mac and fries and no one gets hurt. And a large Coke.

If you are going to be relevant in today's world, try to innovate your menu's with some change. Would look forward to going to the one down the street when it rolls out. Hopefully they will consider having Green Chili at their NM locations.

I should add, the image above. Would it be hard to op for whole wheat/grain instead of bleached white flour?

Taco Bell is sadly one of the worst fast food restaurants. Man, I wish it was actually good where I live.

Gourmet from Taco Bell. If they make something edible I'll try it. All their food tasted like cheap meat and 3 cents worth of chili powder. We'll see with the change.
