Taco Bell Launching 'Gourmet' Menu: Weird or Wonderful?

When you think of Taco Bell, you probably think of getting a quick, cheap Mexican food fix, often at, say, 2 in the morning. But the fast-food chain no longer wants to be known as a greasy spoon. To compete with Chipotle (considered a "premium" chain), Taco Bell has launched a new "gourmet" menu -- designed by a TV chef -- that includes fancier ingredients like whole black beans, cilantro rice, fire-roasted corn salsa and pico de gallo. The best part? The new items at Taco Bell are still $5 or less.

Developed by chef Lorena Garcia, who has appeared on NBC's "America's Next Great Restaurant," the new Cantina Bell includes: whole black beans with Mexican spices; cilantro rice with onion, garlic, and parsley; citrus and herb-marinated chicken with tomatillo; new guacamole made with Hass avocados, jalapenos, cilantro and tomatoes; fire-roasted Corn salsa with red and green peppers and spices; creamy cilantro dressing; pico de gallo, diced tomatoes and onions with cilantro, lemon juice and vinegar; vegetarian versions of salad bowls and burritos

The gourmet menu at the fast food chain launches July 5 across the U.S. Will you check out the new eats? Or do you avoid fast-food places like Taco Bell -- even with its added gourmet style?

Sounds delicious. I'll have to try it after it rolls out. In the restaurant business, like any other business, if you aren't moving forward you are falling behind. I applaud Bells initiative.

Bottom line is that the food is coming from the same core ingredients used in their 'non-gourmet' products. I would like to see what kind of crap they add to their new 'gourmet' marinades, dressings, salsas...

It depends on one's definition of 'gourmet'. A hamburger might be gourmet food for someone who has only eaten baloney all their life.

You mean they're not gourmet already? Come on they've got like six ingredients and six different kinds of tortilla and five hundred menu items!!! (They all taste the same, AWESOME!!!)

Nope; not for me! I've learned to eat from the Value Menu, which to me, means a couple of Cheese Wraps, with a 98 cent cheese nachos. Simple, and cheap!

I'd love to check out a better food choice out there than the standard fast food fare! Good for Taco Bell and I think they'll find a new niche for themselves doing it!

I seldom eat fast food at a drive thru, but when I do, it is at Taco Bell or Wendy's. As I often have someone with me who is a vegetarian, I LOVE that Taco Bell & others are offering salads. I'll eat at many fast food places at lunch as long it is NOT Sushi. To each his own but calling it "gourmet" is really 'reaching' - LOL.

I'm not going to knock it until I try it, though I can't say I'll be rushing to Taco Bell as soon as this comes out. It could be fairly good or really bad.

Just... lol. "Gourmet" Taco Bell is still Taco Bell. I hate it when fast food restaurants try to market themselves as fancier than the grease buckets they are. Mostly because there are a lot of people who fall for it.

As evidenced by the above poll results...
