In the ever growing mobile world, tablets appear to be replacing the laptop in local coffee shops and bus stops. Just the other day, I witnessed a man playing Angry Birds on his iPad as he waited for the bus to arrive at his stop. I can't recall ever witnessing such a sight with a laptop at a bus stop. Are tablets poised to replace our laptops?

VENTUREBEAT.COM reports:
That tablet in your hand could soon become the most popular mobile device sold -- even the ubiquitous notebook PC, new research finds. Shipments of tablets -- exemplified by Apple's iPad -- will almost quadruple to 416 million units by 2016, up from the current 121 million units, the research firm NPD announced today.

I have a SmartPhone (Droid) that can do most anything a tablet can.
I use a NetBook for more powerful computing, multi-tasking, etc...

I could never picture replacing my laptop with a tablet... Besides, a tablet is basically a bigger version of a smart phone.

NEITHER!!! You can get far more computing power for a lot less money with a deskop or tower.

Tablets are quite useful, but also somewhat of a fad. Try typing anything longer than a page on a tablet.

Clicked "Tablet" but SH has a mind of its own. Yes, I think tablets will replace laptops for several reasons but for me, NO MORE MICROSOFT is a huge bonus.

I think that estimation is because so many schools are going to the tablet--it's cheaper to replace and has enough memory to hold plenty of homework assignments for the students to complete and bring back to class. Personally, I like my 15.6 in. laptop--easy on the eyes, can watch anything w/o squinting, eyes getting tired, and easy, easy typing.

I still like my laptop more than my tablet and my desktop more than the laptop. To me a laptop does not have enough guts for video and photo editing. Nice toy for chit chat but not labor intensive work. I have three big photo editing software programs on my desktop with 16gb of RAM and 4 hardrives with 1TB per drive and plenty of power. Laptop could not handle it and tablet is still a toy with playtime apps but not a work horse for document work.

The tablet does not replace either my phone or my laptop, yet the two can accomplish anything the tablet can. Therefore, I have no use for a tablet.

While many will have Tabs I don't think they will replace laptops which is what I saw when I clicked on the link... your headline read "will tabs replace laptops"...
I think there is plenty need for laptops for writing and other tasks, mostly people are using tabs for fun things but I can't see them replacing for hardcore tasks and I still think that while tabs are fun and trendy right now I don't think that tabs are better.

App development programs are all made for computers, laptops can hold up their own screens, and have more cpu power.
I like the dockable Asus Transformer tablet, but until I can get some real work done on it, I'm sticking with my Touchsmart convertible tablet/laptop

    The Keyboards I use ..
are adapted for my Disability ..
(and so are the apps that I use)

    the Notebooks ..
too small .. too limited ..
    same with the tablets ..
(seriously .. even the low vision require a larger screen and more space to feel the marks on the keys)

At this time .. the apps on my Android are helpful ..
the screen is pretty much useless though
(just too tiny .. even a finger swipe i huge given the teensy size of the device)
would be nice to see a tablet with ..
well .. using a stylus for more accuracy ..
and more apps to support the independence of those of us with disabilities ..

    Definitely agree ..
    Being BLIND ..
these screens for the Smartphones .. since I have to touch/sweep and listen .. I can easily miss what I want just because of the size of my fingers ..
it would definitely be helpful if the screens were larger, there were more adaptations for the Blind .. and I could still use the handy tools that are already here (for example .. color identification, reading the UPC (to tell me about the item in the store), telling me what money I have in my hand (especially the bills), 'reading' menus to me in the restaurants .. etc).

You should be part of an App developement team. : )You have some great ideas! I have very limited vision in one eye=depth perception sometimes a problem--always having trouble with the touch sweep--a stylus would be so helpful sometimes.

    THANKS!

It is too bad that so many times .. that those of us who are disabled .. who can definitely use these Tech Advances in some easy to adapt ways .. are not part of the Idea Generation team .. nor listened to in the development phases of the devices ..

Long past time where the Deaf .. the Mobility Impaired .. the Blind .. can and SHOULD Be included everyday with the Development phase of these apps, Hardware, and software ..

The biggest thing for anyone who is Blind though .. is the ability to travel, get places independently ..

I'm very much watching the Google efforts on GPS driverless vehicles ..

This is something that would be such a BOON to the Blind .. (including myself) .. I'm so independent .. and nowadays .. when I need someone to drive me somewhere .. it is so ... frustrating .. that I just can't get up and go whenever I want ..

A private vehicle .. adapted for this technology .. validated .. that could travel the backroads in safety .. would be a blessing indeed!

Hello Las Vegas! The test runs there were VERY Successful, so I have read, it would be the almost-ideal place for handicapped to live. I think LV will be the first city to institute these cars. They should be mandatory for tourists in Hawaii who rent cars--sooo much easier and safer for them, and way fewer accidents.

for there's so many who are Disabled ..
    living rurally ..
who definitely can benefit from these tech evolutions right NOW ..

I need a keyboard, personally, but tablets definitely have their uses. I would like an ipad, but then I would have a macbook, an ipod and an ipad- how excessive. As much as I like apple products, I want to stop looking at their ads because they do a good job of turning wants into needs. The idea that we're made to feel like we need so many gadgets is disturbing. Tablets are great, but they're not intended for serious work-apart from reading.

    What is an AIO?

AIO=All In One= a computer that house all its components in the same framework with the screen--generally placed behind the screen, Hence the entire computer is behind the screen--no more bulky tower on the floor or desk taking up space. The screen size is much like a TV, measured in inches. The keyboard is usually wireless, and if not, wireless keyboards are available where ever computers are sold. The screen sits up off the surface of the desk on two supports located on the left and right corners of the screen housing, so the only part of the computer touching the desk is the keyboard and the screen supports. A used/fully refurbished AIO is available from the manufactures website, or Best Buy, for a nice savings over the cost of a new one--especially the Apple models--a good investment for retired couples on a budget. My son has an older Hewitt-Packard AIO that has served him well, it has a big screen that is great for watching movies, he also can watch TV on it, but never does. I like it better than my laptop because of the 26 in. across X 16.5 in. high screen size that is so easy to view and read. A good investment for any person with sight problems: a handicapped adult or child who would benefit from a large view screen for easily- obtained online classes.
