In the ever growing mobile world, tablets appear to be replacing the laptop in local coffee shops and bus stops. Just the other day, I witnessed a man playing Angry Birds on his iPad as he waited for the bus to arrive at his stop. I can't recall ever witnessing such a sight with a laptop at a bus stop. Are tablets poised to replace our laptops?

VENTUREBEAT.COM reports:
That tablet in your hand could soon become the most popular mobile device sold -- even the ubiquitous notebook PC, new research finds. Shipments of tablets -- exemplified by Apple's iPad -- will almost quadruple to 416 million units by 2016, up from the current 121 million units, the research firm NPD announced today.

I have a SmartPhone (Droid) that can do most anything a tablet can.
I use a NetBook for more powerful computing, multi-tasking, etc...

Just like the top comment said tablets are just glorified smart phones. I really don't see the point of getting one if you already have a smart phone and a laptop.

Tablets are fine at media viewing or quick file sharing or even minor word processing, but in reality nothing more. At least not yet.
If you need computing power on the go, get a laptop, it's really that simple.

I feel that tablets are a little too limited. Plus, I'm horrible with virtual keyboards. I do love the laptops that can flip over to become like tablets.

iPad analysis (1 week from date of first ipad purchase, I mainly use mine for reading)

Pros: Touchscreen, Highly mobile (lightweight device even saves me from carrying my textbook), unique applications that are not found on regular computers, syncs with iPhone very well, comparatively very long battery life.

Cons: I miss having a physical keyboard (Bluetooth keyboards work, but reduce my mobility. I'd like a holographic keyboard.), some programs are incompatible.

I bought a tablet and I still have not figured out what it is good for, it is terrible to type much on the touch screen, a key board is much nicer. I can not plug my printer into it. I can not think of one thing other than that it is slightly more portable that a good small laptop, like the one I am using right now can not do just as well, and in nearly all cases, much better. When I have the place to put it and plug everything in I much prefer a good old fashioned desktop model.

When the first major tablet came out I figured it was the start of the decline of laptops. I still prefer a laptop though, because I love a keyboard and being able to torrent.

I passed the 'touch the picture' phase when I was about 5 years old. Haven't looked back since. It might be nice as a toy in addition to a laptop, but it's not going to replace my day to day desktop or laptop.

I prefer having a keyboard. No matter how big a tablet may be; I absolutely despise on-screen keyboards. Quite frankly they take longer to use and fingerprints constantly on my screen? No thanks.

Most allow you to use a normal size keyboard. I use a wireless one with my iPad about 50% of the time. MUCH easier than using the touch screen, especially at first.Over time you do get used to the touchscreen keyboard when needed. In my experience, at least.
