In the ever growing mobile world, tablets appear to be replacing the laptop in local coffee shops and bus stops. Just the other day, I witnessed a man playing Angry Birds on his iPad as he waited for the bus to arrive at his stop. I can't recall ever witnessing such a sight with a laptop at a bus stop. Are tablets poised to replace our laptops?

VENTUREBEAT.COM reports:
That tablet in your hand could soon become the most popular mobile device sold -- even the ubiquitous notebook PC, new research finds. Shipments of tablets -- exemplified by Apple's iPad -- will almost quadruple to 416 million units by 2016, up from the current 121 million units, the research firm NPD announced today.

I have a SmartPhone (Droid) that can do most anything a tablet can.
I use a NetBook for more powerful computing, multi-tasking, etc...

I like keyboards, Also I can maintain a more comfortable sitting position when using a laptop than with a tablet. I also don't see tablets being able to handle computer games the way laptops and desktops can.

The bad thing about tablets is the same thing about the phone Im using right now- no keypad! Ur fingertips get sore and u can't type as fast with a touchscreen.

I have my macbooks (pro and air), my ipad, and iphone, all of them have things they are great for so I don't necessarily think one is particularly better than the other, it simply depends what I want to do.

I can do more with a laptop.

When I look at tablets the phrase that pops into my mind is "paying more for less."

It really depends on what you're going to use it for. Consumption of programs and entertainment, tablets rule. For document production and portability, laptops. For heavy duty production, towers are best.

It totally depends what your going to be doing. I do a lot of research so I have to use a laptop as a tablet is useless. I also have a tablet which is convenient for checking on things, scheduling, a few other business functions and recreational use.
    But
Honestly I prefer to be parked behind my desk top computer at home.

I have an iPad 2 and those things are better and faster than laptops because I've known from experience. Because I had a laptop 2 years before I got the iPad, and it got viruses WAY easier, soon it got extremely annoying, but an iPad is much faster and never gets viruses when I use it, I got an iPad for my birthday on December last year and my laptop broke a month ago so now I only have an iPod, iPad 2, and phone. Oh and btw, IPads are less breakable becuase that's the reason my laptop broke, because someone dropped it on the floor, but and iPad you don't have to worry about that becuase you can put protection around it, laptops are going to be banned, yes they are. My opinion.

It depends on how it will be used. Apparently a lot of people have more time to play than to work, althought the convenience and portability of tablets can't be denied.

Tablets are still to limited in what you can do with them to replace laptops. They are good at watching media, file sharing or messing/word processing, basically like a over-sized smart phone, are in reality nothing more than that. When you need do serious work on the go, you still need a laptop, Until tablets match the capabilities of a laptop, there are nothing more than super sized smartphones.

Actually, neither. Something like this will be the future: http://www.ubuntu.com/devices...

A smartphone that can be snapped into a dock in the shape of a laptop, tablet or desktop. Why have three separate things when you can have all in one?

The versatility of the tablet is better suited to the paradigm shifts we've seen in computing over the last decade. If trends continue as they have been, the real loser will be the traditional desktop.

I had one and I sold it. Not enough memory for a lot of gaming or anything else. No disc drive if I wanted to watch a DVD or play a game you can't find online. I'm now buying both separately.
