Swazi Proposes HIV Branding, Then Apologizes: Is HIV branding a good idea?

Coffee-Aholic May 29, 2009 17:49:14

A Swazi parliamentary official proposed branding HIV patients on the butt, as to stop the spread of the virus. However, this raged Swaziland, and Timothy Myeni apologized for his proposal. The idea behind this, was so that people could "check" their partners for an HIV branding stamp before sex. But, the idea was taken very strongly in a bad direction. What do you think? Is HIV branding a good idea?

Actually, HIV branding could help to stop the spread of the virus.

I don't think I would ever expect anyone to tell me the truth. That is not even realistic. Every person with HIV should have a mark somewhere. I should be a law. People lie...and to be foolish enough to take someone's word is asking for the death sentence. To think most of these acts start out in a bar or drinking is involved...I'm sure that everyone with HIV is going to announce it to everyone they come into contact with. Take care of YOURSELF.

I think the Swazi's idea for HIV butt branding is...

is perfect and a good thing...to often people get hiv/aids from people who know they have it...but dont put it on the butt of someone...brand them where we can all see it...that way if they person falls over and needs mouth to mouth, you have the choice to save them or kill yourself...
since the virus can be spread through saliva, even giving mouth to mouth is dangerous....,

If you start branding or tattooing people for having HIV what is to stop the process from going further….Then people will be branded for other reasons….sounds a bit like a Totalitarianism movement, which I fear some people are making an effort to make a part the system in this country.

If this ever became a rampant disease with big parts of society getting it, I'm sorry, we'd have to do something.

What this Swazi said is actually something that has been murmured about in the past.

Africa does indeed have a big problem with the disease.

a good idea until you start thinking.....The problem you have here is that not all HIV infected people are guilty of anything...What if the person got HIV through a transfusion or a baby is born with it....

If those people can't control themselves then they should tatoo "HIV+" on their foreheads. If they are having sex with someone they are condemning that person to death also.

Not a bad intention, but it is "labeling", and would be on the same order as having drunk plates on your car.

Until people behave themselves and quit breaking the laws and harming others, maybe labeling is our only option. At least then people will know who to avoid. Commit the crime- do the time.

That IS a good point. I sure as hell would want to know if i knew ANYONE that had HIV. Some people have gotten it from blood transfusions, though, and they are the ones i feel for.

I think the Swazi's idea for HIV butt branding is...

I think it would definately help in reducing the spread of HIV,but would be humiliating and someone would sue....
But I would like to know if the person I was having sex with had HIV and frankly they don't want to tell you, they would rather expose you without your knowledge
Brand in a place where only a sex partner would be able to see it, so not to expose it to the rest of the world, there is some privacy issues there to think about too.

I thinks its a good idea, they should brand it in a place that's only visible if you choose to show it. This gives you your privacy and allows sex partners to check for it. If your worried about a sex partner seeing it then your wrong in the first place for not telling your partner before hand.

NO. HIV branding is humiliating and demoralizing.

For one thing, patients have rights to privacy. the other thing is people should be looking out for themselves and wearing protection when having sex with people they don't know or at least asking the question...do you have HIV? Education and honesty are the answer, not branding.

I think those people who have it just need to tell people about it. Branding someone is reminding me of the Holocaust, and the tattoos. No one deserves it. But if they know they have it and try to spread it, they deserve to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

I think the Swazi's idea for HIV butt branding is...

Branding is a bad idea because the brand can be branded over, just as tattoos can be redesigned over. It'll only increase the number of people choosing to do this form of bodyart to cover over the branding. A better idea is to have a global database where anyone can look up their partner for specifics on HIV, herpes, gonorrhea, and more, but that violates privacy laws, and so branding should be considered a form of breaking privacy laws.
  • Wrapper ~ pkeyrich May 30, 2009 20:23:13 (edited)
    Wrapper ~
This is so about a global or national database, but then it goes on to "HIV often doesn't show in the blood for 3 months" so people would need to get tested all the time honestly.

Also, when it comes to sex, some people might just outright lie and say they don't have it, so honesty can not really play a real part.

AIDS rarely happens to those who want to be wreckless but when it strikes, having a monogamous relationship or abstinence are lifestyles that are healthy.

an absolutely horrible idea designed for a horrible situation.

There needs to be much more work done on identifying and halting the spread of AIDS. But this is a ridiculous concept which will actually work against the desired goal. People will hide their infection. How anyone could think of this is beyond me.

But more people should come out of the HIV closet. There's still a stigma attached to it obviously. Prevention is in a combination of teaching safer sex practices and self-worth. closet stigma attached prevention combination teaching safer sex practices self-worth closet stigma attached prevention combination teaching safer sex practices self-worth
look for words like poz, or 'breeding'.

There are probably thousands of HIV positive repeat offending drug addicted prostitutes of both sexes or their "johns" walking the streets of our country. They should be given a choice of an attempted murder rap or a discretely placed, but easily viewable mark of some nature.

OK. Let's start branding diabetics, cancer patients, alcoholics, asthmatics; people with tuberculosis, high blood pressure; drug addicts and lest we forget people suffering from Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. I’m sure I’ve missed a few but this line of thought sickens me. I guess I need to be branded also.
