Traditional Southern diets may be linked to a higher risk of stroke, a researcher said at a conference on Thursday. The lead researcher, Suzanne Judd, a nutritional epidemiologist at the University of Alabama, said her study is the first large-scale effort to look at stroke and a diet of such foods as fried chicken and fish, bacon, ham and sweet teas.

“Fatty foods are high in cholesterol, sugary drinks are linked to diabetes and salty foods lead to high blood pressure,” Judd said in a statement. Those are all factors in the risk of cardiovascular disease. The research was presented at the International Stroke Conference in Hawaii.

Most Southern food is cooked in grease. No surprise there.

Its so good it just can't be bad. Grandparents lived to be 93. Last night we had pork chops, fried apples, gravy and steamed vegetables with cheese. A stroke just waiting for me

I knew that certain southern dishes were nortoriously fattening, but I wasn't
aware that southern food, in general was necessarily bad for you.

Been living in the south for the past 6 or 7 years, and I know for certain it's bad for you. I'm getting ready to move back north and the only thing I'm going to miss is the gator tail.

Who cares? We all are going to die no matter how we eat. I hate dumb ass research like these because if you're dumb enough (and some people do eat this way) to eat fried foods each and everyday, then I have no sympathy for you.

Everyone knows what they are suppose to eat. It's okay to eat a greasy burger every once in a while, or friend catfish once a month...

Eat FRUIT, VEGGIES, SALADS, people!!!!! :)

Better to die young from good southern cooking that to live to 100 eating patchouli and smoking cannabis.

The truth is is doesn't matter if you are eating southern food or any other type of food. It's all bad for you. It's not the food, it all the things that are contaminating the food we eat.

Decades back what Our grandparents and great grandparents ate was truly organic, without artificial preservatives, additives and genetically modified ingredients. It doesn't matter if you fry your chicken or bake it because that chicken had been more than likely feed genetically modified grains contaminated with pesticides and who knows what else.

The preparation of the food doesn't matter all that much when it comes from the grocery store already bad for you. And don't think that organic means it's healthier. Just because that wheat may have been grown without using pesticides doesn't mean that the wheat grain itself is not genetically altered. It doesn't mean that non-altered grains haven't been cross pollinated through natural means (For example wind blowing pollen to another field ) with genetically altered grains.

Stop listening to these scientists doing their little studies and start educating yourself on how the food you eat is being tampered with.

If one overindulges, it is bad for health. Delicious food - pass the fried chicken please.

I'm never surprised at anything the LA times prints that involves the word "Southern"......the problem with all diets is the sedentary life people live.....I have several relatives and friends who ate pork fat all their lives and lived to be in their 80's and 90's....but they worked like trojans on the farm, rather than spend their life sitting at a computer or smart phone.......much illness is hereditary.......good wholesome food is not the problem......it's stress and not enough exercise that's the problem.....

My mother-in-law is 108 - all her brothers and sisters made it to their mid and late 90's --- never met a fried chicken they did not like or a cellar of salt.

And the food they started with was much healthier to begin with before they cooked it.

These became traditional diets, when people got up 2 hours before sun rise, worked until 2 hours after sun set doing physical labor. They needed those kinds of diets to fuel their bodies. We switched to an industrial economy that required 1/3 the caloric intake and never changed our eating habits.
