Are you a dog lover? Or do you prefer to cuddle with a kitty cat? If you picked pooches, we have good news for you: owning a dog may be good for your health.

dog cat

In a study at University of California, San Francisco, researchers found that house dust from homes with dogs helped protect against a common cold strain, the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV.) And now scientists are saying this could apply to kids, too, ABC News reports.

RSV can be severe and even fatal in premature and chronically ill infants, and it is associated with increased risk of developing asthma, ABC reports. The new study adds credence to the theory that exposure to animals early in life helps "train" the immune system, and prevent kids from getting asthma. Having a dog has also been linked to better cardiovascular health, reduced anxiety and loneliness and other health benefits. So ... do you prefer dogs? Or cats?

I love cats, I don't even need to call mine, I only need put my hand on the door handle and he'll come running. However, the last thing about the cat being held captive was hilarious XD

They require less babysitting, as they can basically care for themselves, (which is really nice) and I find the affection of a cat to be more rewarding. Cats are smarter than dogs, so it's a little like the love of a woman; it's not always easy to get, but that makes it more worth getting. They are intellectually closer to humans than dogs, and as such they are more like humans, in that they don't just "blindly love" like dogs do. Cats make you earn their friendship, just like another human does, which is exactly why some people prefer dogs; they are looking for someone with whom they can have a relationship that is rewarding with no effort. The drawback to that is that I think the relationship potential with dogs is minimal; they're just dumb companions, whereas cats can really be your friend, in an almost human sense.

For whatever its worth, if you ever see "Living with a Calculating Cat" at a bookstore, it's hilarious, though I think it's been out of print for several decades. It illustrates through comedy the "specialness" of cats.

I agree.... me and my cat Neko carry on conversations. It's like he understands what I'm saying. I have seen some amazing and intelligent dogs I must say though..... like police dogs and a dog my parents had when I was a baby. They said he knew where my crib was in the house and so he would sleep under my window to protect me. But living with a cat is like having a cool roommate.

I have a dog and he is so cute, I prefer them because there more interactive and they can become your bestfriend if you get what I mean. But if you prefer silence and stuff, cat's are like silent company:)!

Dogs are fine, but cats need less fuss, they are very independant. Some care homes now have visits from dog owners, and it seems that fussing a dog actually lifts the spirits of the old folk, and cheers them up too. dog visit in care home

Actually, if you've ever looked on the news or watched animal planet. Theres cats that have saved there owners, one woke them up to a fire and they got out safety. And one cat, attacked a bulgar that was breaking into the house.

This is difficult. You should have included an "undecided" option or something.

For me dogs just pip it. You don't get scratches all over you with dogs and they are more affectionate. You can also take them for a walk/run. Cats just run away from you and hide under cars!

I disagree.... my mother in law gets scratches on her arms from her dogs jumping on her and cats can be very affectionate. But yes there should have been a undecided option.

I beg your pardon. As I said in other statements. My cats were leash trained and we went for long walks in the woods. There were times when they would step on a twig and it would lift up on one end which would scare them and they would jump in the air, You have no idea how much fun you can have with a cat..

Take the lead off your cat and watch it annoyingly run away from you. dogs dont do this. Dont get me wrong I still love cats but dogs just edge it.

When I get home, my cat always runs up to me with her tail straight up in the air. I call it the "friendly greeting tail." As a bonus, she doesn't jump, slobber, or make excessive noise. Those are cute pictures, though.
