Are you a dog lover? Or do you prefer to cuddle with a kitty cat? If you picked pooches, we have good news for you: owning a dog may be good for your health.

dog cat

In a study at University of California, San Francisco, researchers found that house dust from homes with dogs helped protect against a common cold strain, the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV.) And now scientists are saying this could apply to kids, too, ABC News reports.

RSV can be severe and even fatal in premature and chronically ill infants, and it is associated with increased risk of developing asthma, ABC reports. The new study adds credence to the theory that exposure to animals early in life helps "train" the immune system, and prevent kids from getting asthma. Having a dog has also been linked to better cardiovascular health, reduced anxiety and loneliness and other health benefits. So ... do you prefer dogs? Or cats?

My beautiful dog had to be put down last Thursday. I am still grieving. He was a Black Lab-Blue Heeler Mix, only 10 1/2, but he had a horrible wasting illness called a Protein Losing Enteropathy that he couldn't recover from. He is the dog shown sitting in the chair on my avatar.
I will get another dog. They are so loving and sweet.

I like that my pets independent and while I like dogs, they're too noisy. I mean, one of my cats sings when it's getting close to dinner time, but it's a much nicer sound than barking and the dog I had barked at every little noise he heard outside.

So, I prefer cats, but like dogs.

If I had to choose it would be dogs because at least they show you apprectiation. My cat acts like he doesn't want to be bothered with me unless I'm pouring food in his bowl. Dogs will love you no matter what. Cats on the other hand, not so much.

Definently dogs. I absolutely love them with all my heart . In fact , I've already established that they will be my "children" when I get older :). It might sound crazy, but dogs capture a humans heart as much as a child does <3

Cats are even better for your health than dogs are. Cats are also much more intelligent than dogs (which is likely why many people prefer dogs as they are easier for them to "keep up with.")

Interesting, however, their explanation doesn't sound very scientific. It's more of a "we think it is this way" type of a guess. I am definitely not convinced.
Also, I have had a lot of experience with both dogs and cats. From personal observation, I would conclude that cats are generally smarter.

The dogs must have been basset hounds. Try a lab or a border collie next time.

The difference is that dogs care about pleasing their owners. Cats, well maybe maybe not!

I love both, but cat's are more easy going, and take less attention.
e.g. a cat flap for getting in and out of the house
We can't exactly get one of those for our great dane. We have to open the door for him... except when he decided to kick it, then it just comes off the hinges.

My cat always makes me happiest. I have both though. That's an interesting bit of info about dogs and colds, but I don't understand how that works, at least within my own home.

There is no doubt that it's good to have something that loves you back. It's great to have a pet that listens. It's nice to have a pet that you can walk and gives me an excuse to get out and exercise. I certainly can see why dogs are good for your health.
