Study: Red states more charitable - POLITICO.com: Are liberals selfish?

Liberals, I think, believe that the government should provide for the poor and the sick. Rather than giving individuals the choice to freely donate and volunteer their time and money, large government taxes everyone and regulates who receives the people's money.

They are either:
1. GIMME GIMMES
2. Socialist Ideologues who want the government to do all giving
3. Ignorant

People in any of those three groups are not inclined to be charitable.

I'd say they're all of the above.

Sorry Libs, but ya'll are all about "ME" first. But you are pretty quick to say yes give money when it belongs to someone else.

Politico is hardly neutral in their findings....they always lean heavily to the right and ignore the facts. Also, many people with lesser incomes do donate to their churches yet because they do not have a lot of income, they tend not to itemize the tax returns. In other words they give but do not get a tax write-off for it. A widowed woman in our office falls under that category. Faithfully she gives 10% of her income to the church but because her home is paid off and she has nothing else to write-off she files a 1040EZ every year. Don't believe everything people tell you, it not always as it seems.

Politico is not the first to come up with these findings. As a tax preparer I have personal first hand knowledge of stingy liberals. So contrary to your valiant defense and logic I still think it is flawed. I do believe conservatives give more than liberals. It does fit with the general mindset of liberals. They believe in the collective, whereas conservatives and libertarians believe it is up to the individual(s).

I respectfully disagree with you that liberals are stingy. I KNOW better than that. It is also a fact that most of the wealthy people in this country happen to be Republicans, therefore have more to give. You can see by the verse below, Jesus has a different idea than Politico. As a tax preparer, or Politico, etc....YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO JUDGE OTHERS.

Nice bible verse but it doesn't address a really well documented trend. Even correcting for income level, many studies have seen that conservatives are simple more charitable.

It's completely consistent with the conservative philsophy so it's simply not a surprise.

Liberals want everyone else to donate and pay taxes so they can keep their money.

Unless of course it's somebody else's money.

You have the Giver States with more money to give and you have the Taker States that also take more taxes thus less to give away.

When you believe in big government you out-source being your brother's keeper.

The oft-used phrase by liberals to 'take care of our people' means 'make somebody else pay money to the poor while I go get high'.
