Mental fatigue, maybe. Mostly based on the strain of eyes that are overexposed to computer screens.

However, causing mental illness seems a great stretch. How, I wonder, did they isolate ALL OTHER FACTORS in this study?

People who're constantly out among the public online or locally can develop mental disorders; any input from any source, and lack of any, can promote mental disorders in people who're emotionally sensitive.

It depends on the person. Too much of anything in excess in that certain type of person can cause a mental imbalance. Things affect everyone differently

Why are people saying stuff about "moderation" when the one sentence you actually have to read for the poll says "constantly"? Which is pretty much the opposite of moderate. I think the internet can be dangerous to people's mental health and if they're predisposed to a disorder, it can help encourage it. Not to mention the whole internet addiction thing.

I defiantly think that it does have an impact on your eyesight. Constantly looking at a computer screen puts strain on your eyes. As light passes through your brain processes all the information. off course it will have an effect. As far as a brain disorder, for most people I doubt it. But too much of anything is bad )

I do agree that spending too much time on the computer can cut into your sleeping pattern, which can be bad for students when it comes to school. However, I don't believe that it's so severe that it needs to be labeled as a mental disorder.
You will develop mental disorders as you get older, computer or not.

I agree that it CAN cause mental disorders, but do not believe that it necessarily will cause mental disorder in every internet user. Some people are more at risk of mental disorder than others.

I tend to think that it's not so much that it's inherently bad to be online but that people tend to not do other things when they spend too much time online: exercise, maintain real-life relationships, connect with the natural world, etc.

A mental disorder can sometimes be the causation of excessive online usage. Prolonged sensory deprivation can be harmful to the psyche, as can excessive stimulation.

Have you ever been declared perfectly mentally healthy by a doctor? If not, you don't really know if you have a mental disorder. You might have one and not notice-- especially if you've never researched mental disorders and don't know the symptoms to look for. :P
