No - no more than using one hand to steer a vehicle while texting or talking on the phone. 'Can't see how the size of your belly can distract you whilst driving...

A larger abdomen does impede ones ability to operate a vechicile. Pregnancy also.

Obesity has affect cognitive abilities. However, its unfair to blame only obesity. Generally people with fast-food diets (who aren't always obese), smokers, people who have sat in a window-less or not aired out office space in a chemically cleaned space without significant oxygen intake, toxic chemicals from cleaners of their own households, and I'm probably missing a lot: but they also have "fuzzed" or reduced cognitive process because of it.

Increased risk of being in one: ridiculous.
Increased risk of being injured: plausible

Stupid ass texting, using phones, not paying attention is what causes accidents. 5' 10" 174Lbs. by the way.

That makes sense because it limits people's ability to maneuver.

You shouldn't be "maneuvering" anywhere. You're sitting behind the wheel, all you need to do is be able to turn the wheel and reach the pedals.

Yes, but a large pot belly restricts one's ability to do that.

Because it makes it harder to turn the steering wheel when you need to swerve or whatever. That's why.

The steering wheel is not obstructed by anyone's belly. Get that straight.

No, not necessarily...the inevitable questions about weight causing inability-or-restricted ability to steer, apply the brakes, distracted by that whopper meal being eaten while driving. My question to the researchers: for each person included in this study--was their weight gain before, or, after an auto accident? What are we really seeing here in these statistics?--an excuse for auto insurance companies to increase rates for over-weight drivers, regardless of driving history!

Damn, i ment to say "Yes" as you are more prone to heart attacks which could cause accidents, along with the fact that who knows you might just end up eating behind the wheel and cause some accidents just 'cause you were stupid

Being over weight can cause many different kinds of problems, also, there's only so much room behind the wheel of a car.

skinny people have accidents too. it's doing too much other stuff besides paying attention to what is going on around us that causes accidents.
keep hands on the wheels, eyes on the road and ears listening to what is happening not totally absorbed talking on phone, listening to radio.
sometimes it just being at the wrong place at the right time.
so stay lert at all times!

the inability to keep your hands on the wheel and pay attention is the cause.
Stop the phones, stop the cigarettes, stop with the make-up. C'mon folks, just pay attention!
hands wheel pay attention phones cigarettes make-up folks pay attention

While I don't believe that people should eat all of the crap and be reticent in their physical activities, I don't believe that "obesity" is the cause of anything but possible ill health to that person - and perhaps the example to their children.

Check out the documentary "Fat Head" for more information.

Not if you position the seat properly.

Obese bashing is just the left's next target after smokers. Next it will be "mental health" as in, if you don't agree with us you're crazy. It's already starting.

You can maneuver car seats and steering wheels all over to fit almost everybody. That article was sketchy at best. Old people are far worse. Then there's the normal sized drivers who are just plain dangerous. Then there's those drivers putting on their makeup and curling their hair or shaving... Yup, driving is dangerous. Drive defensively. P.S. cool traffic photo!

True, but then people don't need to be driving those cars. Shaquille O'Neal doesn't need to drive a Vette, and my sister doesn't need to be driving a crew cab.
