Student Banned From Prom for Romantic Gesture: Just Punishment or Too Harsh?

The Frisky brings news of James Tate, a Connecticut high school student who attempted to woo his date to prom with a grand romantic gesture -- taping enormous cardboard letters to the side of a school, spelling out his request.

romantic gesture taping enormous cardboard letters school spelling request

Problem is, the message got him banned from prom.

Rodrigues was touched and said yes, but then Tate and his accomplices were called into the headmaster's office and given suspensions and banned from the prom for trespassing on school grounds at night. The school was also concerned that it had been a safety risk, though Tate insists that he and his friends were safe and everything while climbing the ladder to tape up the letters.

In case you're wondering, The Frisky informs us that "HMU" stands for "Hit Me Up." Probably not the most romantic way to end this cute request, but we'll still give him props for being creative.

Its just cardboard, its not like he painted it on there. Plus I'm sure he would have removed the letters after she responded.

They were just cardboard letters! It's not like he spray painted the school. They should all be fired for such harsh punishment!

But I'll bet if the school's star football player wanted to run extra laps on the school's track after hours, HE wouldn't be suspended for tresspassing! What a bunch of small minded hypocrites!

spray painting the letters - it would be just punishment.
taping the letters (shows a respect for property) - absolutely too harsh.
trespassing on school grounds - case by case assessment needed (from a real adults - not the juvenile hardnoses that run this school).

Has anyone verified if the Headmaster?mistress is married and has children ? If they do then I really pity their kids as it seems they have no compassion . I can just imagine them telling their kids to be at the table for dinner at 6 pm or go to bed hungry and then at 6:01 sending them to bed without any dinner .
How do you teach school kids to know when to give people another chance if you don't set the example . Could this be why some kids cause violence in schools when they are treated like criminals ?

If he had he had painted on the wall, I would say then the punishment was just, but the way he did it was just to be romantic, and do something outside the box, creative, and still thought about not harming school. because he used cardboard, so yes I feel the punishment is to harsh. Crack down on the crackheads instead of this poor kid, which seems to be a thoughtful student. Principal, not everything is black and white, there are gray areas to rules that allow you to use your judgement, without looking weak!

Please tell me HOW MUCH DAMAGE WAS DONE?

I often sit and wonder about how some of these morons that are "educational officials" got to be officials...just how many people were coherced into making these "educational officals" officials.

Many feel "RULES ARE RULES" and that is a bunch of crap and they know it.

NONE have ever been in love, NONE have ever taken risks, NONE have never had to explain to dad or mom why they were out all night and why their zippers are still open or why is it your hair is all mussed up....

They are such saintly people that we all cannot help but wonder how they have not been cannonized into sainthood.

Can't say. Public or private school? (Headmaster?) Was the campus clearly closed at night, or were there meetings and rehearsals going on, as at the school where I taught. Not enough information to judge. (BUT: A teen, doing something dumb? Where's my smelling salts?)
