I listen to music mostly at work, so I have to use headphones. Don't think my coworkers would appreciate some of what I listen to.

If my roomates don't like my taste in music, that's their problem, not mine. I was part of that group of teens that listened to music nonstop using earbuds and earphones. my hearing is bad, I'm only 22 I need to be able to hear people for another seventy years, then it can quit on me.

I see too many people not hearing sirens or other necessary warnings with earphones. It also takes them "away" from what is happening in a completely different mode than speakers do when listening to music. Insulates them too much, from other people and happenings. I am old fashioned, but I think it is "rude".

earphones also make people victims, especially women joggers in the park and running trails.

I don't like disturbing other people when I listen to music.

Right now I'm listening to this in my cubicle with my noise isolating ear buds:

I used to do speakers, but then my parents got sick of hearing all my metal stuff. So they got my headphones. And not just anykind! Wireless!

Now I can run around and listen to metal! Circle pit in the living room!

The only better ones I used were from memory a 5.1 pair from Microsoft. They had a hollow ring around each can where a rotary speaker circled on a loop track to give that extra ambiance. This was probably 7 or so years ago.

Dangerous to wander the wilds of the City with your hearing drowned out. In Cranbrook a few years ago a dude had a helicopter drop out the sky with an engine failure a got crushed. Turned out he was using an audio device. Even with the motor out, rotors make a fair bit of noise so if he didn't use one, he may have heard it coming. Routinely hear of reports of women getting assaulted while jogging in parks donning them too.

There is an easy fix for that, just use one earbud, then you have your peripheral awareness and you can still listen to what you want. I used to do that at work, I needed to hear announcements over the loudspeaker, I also needed to converse with people from time to time, and in the warehouse I needed to be aware of when and where the forklifts were moving, those can kill you if you aren't paying attention.

You can't appreciate stereo but your suggestion for going 'monaural' while outside is good.

I'd rather have a "lesser" music experience and be alive and unhurt than the alternative... :)

I rarely listen to music on my MP3 player anyhow, I listen to spoken word, podcasts, audiobooks, downloaded radio talk shows and such, so having stereo sound isn't as important to me.

Does headphones count as earphones? If that's the case then I choose headphones. Because you can hear the music better and detect hidden things in the music. Also, no one else can hear the music when you wear the headphones. But with the speakers, they're not clear, they sound bad and neighbors would complain if you put it full volume if you wanted to hear the music better.

I'm the kind of person who's so socially anxious, that if someone passes by while I'm listening to music, I'll mute it automatically. I also prefer headphones over ear buds. Ear buds are uncomfortable as hell.
