Singles Try to Sniff Out Love at Pheromone Parties: Reasonable or Ridiculous?

Sick of online dating? Maybe it’s time to sniff your way to love. Yes, you read that right! Many singles across the country are trying to pick future partners based on scent at “pheromone parties,” the latest craze in matchmaking.

Guests at these get-togethers are asked to sleep in a cotton T-shirt for three nights, in a row in order to capture their “odor print,” and to then bring the shirt with them in a Ziploc bag. At the event, the bags are color-coded based on gender and numbered by guest. Participants only know the number assigned to their own shirt.

The bags are then placed on a table where guests can sniff them at their leisure throughout the party. If a participant finds a scent particularly attractive, he or she can take a picture with the bag at a photo station. These pictures are then projected or posted on a wall so that a shirt’s owner can step forward and meet his or her odor’s admirer.

As strange as these pheromone parties sound, they may actually have some scientific backing. According to the Associated Press, “Research studies using similar T-shirt experiments have shown that people prefer different human scents. But whose smell they prefer is dictated by a set of genes that influence our immune response — which researchers say is nature's way of preventing inbreeding and preserving genetic adaptations developed over time.”

So, what do you think SodaHeads? Are pheromone parties reasonable or ridiculous?

compared to the rest of what's going on in this world and our society... this seems quite sane indeed. besides, smell has always been a part of how I'm attracted to someone.

At most, this is just going to help them find lust, not love. You can't tell a persons personality by how their shirt, or their shorts smell. You might be physically attracted to a person because of how they smell, but that doesn't mean you're going to love them, shoot, you might not even like them.
My opinion, do it the old fashion way: get out there, ask people out, go on real dates, you know, mini golfing, dinner, movies, hikes, picnics, etc, and decide if you like the person or not. If you do, keep going out, if not, drop them like a hot potato and keep looking.

genuine physical attraction will help prevent people becoming marks for users who are only out for money, status, etc. it also helps provide a base for a relationship so that there is a deep motivation to work out this issues. attraction is integral to true romantic love. otherwise it's just friendship.

I think it's a great idea for those who are game to try. Often times pheromones may be a more reliable means of choosing a partner than the social stigma's we're drawn to that are impressed upon us by our culture. I like it.

Women's sense of smell is tied to her emotions & pleasure center. When I worked at a drug store, women would often choose a shampoo based on smell. They'd unscrew each bottle they were considering and take a good whiff until they found one that gave them an olfactory orgasm. They'd get weak at the knees and exclaim with pleasure. If they were with friends, they would pass the bottle around, each would take a hit, and then sigh with satisfaction. I suppose they choose men the same way, only its all subconscious.

While I do believe pharamones have an impact on us, sitting around sniffing each others dirty clothes is just a bit creepy. I'd rather be attracted to someone's scent naturally, not because I had my face buried in your slept in shirt.

we do this ALL the time without being aware that we are doing it, but once its being pointed out you ask yourself, why the Hell are we programmed this way? it makes sense. this is Psychology. Like I said before its something that everyone does including the animal kingdom, we just aren't aware that we're doing it. it's like picking your own social group, at the time you are unaware that your picking people with the same interests, maybe not all but enough to make you friends. It's something we do naturally. IT IS PSYCHOLOGY!!!!!

Reasonable. All species of animals emit pheromones which attract the opposite sex of the same species. Your own (slight, not overpowering!) body odor is a powerful aphrodisiac. I noticed this when I took a young couple under my wings for a few months when their mother turned against them. I helped them get back on their feet and helped them with things like laundry. I noticed that his laundry only smelled like dirty laundry (again, lightly soiled, not heavily soiled as in hard workout). I also noticed that her laundry (lightly soiled) not only smelled like dirty laundry but also had a deep, pleasant odor to it which I could only describe as "feminine". Also, right after we moved to Nevada, her parents let us stay with them for a few weeks, long enough to get on our feet. 4 DAYS after moving in with them, her mother confronted me with a question that blew my mind: "Peter, you've been taking female hormones, haven't you?" My jaw dropped and I asked her, "How did you know?" My body didn't look feminine and her answer was: "You smell EXACTLY like a professional businesswomen who just got off work and took off her suit jacket." Body odors have a STRONG effect on the opposite sex!
