I don't think anyone would mind children being saved first but what about women? Is it right that an 80 year old lady be saved ahead of an 18 year old man? I was watching a program on the Titanic and was reminded that it's women and children first into the lifeboats. I don't know if that is still the policy on ships today but I wondered if everyone else thinks that this is still the right thing to do.

Gender does not determine whether you are better or worse.

Women are our equals. They can be be equal with us in freezing water. Besides I think ships now have enough lifeboats to accomodate the entire crew. And I'm inclined to agree with the poster. There's no good reason a 18yr old man should die as oppose to a 80yr old women. She's should be the one to accept death gracefully not the young man who has the so much life ahead of him. This logic could even be reversed if it were not for the fact that I highly doubt this would even be a issue for a 80yr old man. He'd without question stay with the drowning ship. In my opinion it should be the children and they're mothers and the young. If you're an elderly person you should want the younger generation to live on not selfishly save yourself. The poster is absolutely right, in freezing water hardly anyone would survive hell your chances of surviving in warm water are just as low.

Maybe it is "old school" but I still think yes.

An 18 year old man would stand a better chance of survival in the water than the 81 year old woman.

No one would survive more than 15 minutes in ice cold water like the Titanic sank in. Only 13 of the people who were not in lifeboats when it sank survived after being pulled aboard lifeboats later. I think it would be better to give an 18 year old the chance to have a life rather than an 80 year old who has already had most of theirs.

Yes... I hear you there. But, it is possible for a person to find something to float on and that 18 year old would have the better chance. And, not all waters are going to be like that. In the heat of the moment where is the cut off line going to be? 60 year old women, 50 year old women 40, 30, Should every one be saved according to age? How are you going to determine that?

I think the standard we have now is the best... JMHO

And... there are those 80 year olds who would step aside and allow the younger people to go.

The strong should protect the more helpless even to the point of giving up their own lives,..

Women aren't always more helpless than men, fyi. I agree that the stronger should help the weaker, if given the chance. But you can't classify stronger and weaker by sex.

That's one of the advantages women have, sort of to make up for the menstruation, menopause, childbirth thing.
