Keep rates the same for the near term; then as economy recovers (and it will) phase in some version of Simpson-Bowles and or flat(er) tax system.

I'd feel a lot better about raising rates on "the rich" (the REALLY rich, defined by assets and not only income) if the lefties who clamor about "fair share" would solidly define what "fair share" IS, promise not to move the goal post once they get their fair share rates and give us a Constiutional amendment to that effect.

Many, many conservative economists have written and said that the solution to the debt and deficit crises must include increased taxes on the wealthy. Only those who are listening exclusively to Murdoch's minions really believe otherwise. Historically, it's been necessary...and I'm talking about from the beginnings of civilization.

Can you name those conservative economists? I know of one or two myself, but how many does it take to be "Many, many?"

And I wonder: Is it possible that only those who are listening exclusively to MSNBC's minions really believe "Only those who are listening exclusively to Murdoch's minions really believe otherwise?".

I listen to Fox daily and mostly avoid MSNBC. I'll admit I do find Zakaria to be the most honest pundit around, not trying to confuse listeners with "his take" being "no spin". I've been impressed with his balance of conservative and liberal pundits, including Norquist.

I haven't written down the names of the economists but I do remember hearing the view from Greenspan, Stockman, Ben Stein, and numerous others on the several shows that I watch. That the bipartisan Simpson/Bowles committee said the same would include the views of the economists the members consulted.

It is a sensitive subject but it does need to be addressed.
Our government is extremely wasteful when it comes to money. The very people that work in the Human resource department should be constantly checked to make sure they only qualify people if you are legal or really need it. There was a case on the news the other day here where a lady that owns a very successfull restaurant chain had been collecting welfare and health aide and her family lives in a $2 to $300,000 dollar home and it was mentioned that their hosehold income was near $500,000 per year. They had been collecting for 7+ years.
Half of the spending is wastefull.
As far as taxes are concerned, they should be fair. We can not have rich or insanely rich millionaires manipulating the white house for personal gain. The politicians do favors for them and it becomes an unfair practice that ends up making the rich more money while the poor and middle class make less and pay more taxes.

the rich don't pay much in taxes as we have ample proof. The poor don't pay much in taxes because they don't have the money. The people who pay the bulk of taxes are the middle class. The middle class are the spurs of a thriving economy. Tax them too much and nobody buys anything which means the rich don't make money.

Economics from the noon balloon. There is NO "proof" whatsoever that "the rich don't pay much in taxes." If the middle class are the spurs of a thriving economy, then the rich provide the horse. Tax them too much and the middle class will have no jobs which means the middle class can't spur anything. .
