Should we ban Energy drinks?

They have been dubbed ''blackout in a can'' for their disturbing ability to erase the events of the night before. They have killed and hospitalised young people worldwide. And they are directly linked to heart problems, uncharacteristic erratic behaviour, violence and drink-driving.

So why do alcohol companies continue to make high-potency alcopops with added caffeine that are specifically marketed to appeal to our riskiest drinkers - young people?

Alcoholic energy drinks must be banned. And Victoria should lead the charge.

These irresponsible and dangerous products have already caused deaths in America and, sadly, now are suspected in the death of Victorian teenager Sara Milosevic.

These drinks appeal to Generation Y because they are potent, mask the taste and soporific effects of alcohol, and deliver a ''pick me up'' feeling.

Young people are slamming up to 10 of these drinks a night, vastly increasing their risk of hurting themselves, or someone else.

The Age was right to question the manufacturers about just why there is a warning for children on their products.

In December, four states in America pulled alcoholic energy drinks from the shelves. In April last year, the West Australian government banned the sale of alcohol mixed with energy drinks in clubs after midnight. In 2008, Fosters and Lion Nathan showed corporate responsibility by discontinuing their lines of alcoholic energy drinks. Unfortunately, the other companies did not follow their lead.

Although the most popular energy drinks contain the equivalent of an average cup of coffee, combining a stimulant with alcohol is really dangerous and can ''freak out'' the nervous system.

These drinks dissolve your ability to think straight and act safely. You feel you're relatively sober when you're actually very drunk.

Studies have shown that it is common for young people to continue drinking alcoholic energy drinks well after they would usually have called it a night, amplifying the normal risks associated with drinking.

The ''wide awake drunk'' feeling can create a false impression of being in control, which can lead to an increased risk of drink-driving and other risk-taking behaviour and physical injury.

Alcoholic energy drinks have also been linked with disturbed heart rhythms, serious dehydration, uncharacteristic behaviour and violence.

While concerns about alcohol and young people are not new, the difference now is that the market has changed, not the natural curiosity of teens to experiment with booze.

The drinks teens opt for today are more alcoholic, they are aggressively marketed, widely available and cleverly designed to mask the taste of alcohol. And now they include a stimulant ingredient designed to encourage the drinker to consume more.

The Milosevics are seeking answers about why their daughter died. There is a very simple way to prevent further tragedy Ban these drinks altogether.

What do you think?? Should we ban these energy drinks or not?

I have NOTHING against energy drinks. The people who get Hospitalized and Die, those people drink to EXCESS. They put the warnings on the cans for a reason. I am against Alcoholic Energy drinks however, and I will explain why: Naturally, as you drink more alcohol, you will want to drink more, and fall asleep eventually. The caffeine keeps you up and if you keep drinking and drinking, you will kill yourself. I am not against Energy Drinks though, because what people don't get is Limiting themselves. People think "I heard a guy died drinking monster" when what really happened was "A guy drank 15 cans of monster in one sitting."

Unsure why the yes ban them button says I love energy drinks and the no button has a slash through them...but it's up to people to decide if they want them or not. Government is already to big and in our business. We don't need them telling us what we can/can't have. Either way energy drinks don't do anything for me, but I like the occasional red bull just for the taste.

Just because a small minority of people abuse energy drinks does not mean the large majority who don't abuse them should not be aloud to drink energy drinks. Anyway baning things never works because it just makes a small group of people who want what is band even more because it seems more edgy and cool. After all Heroin is band yet there are criminals (mainly in gangs) getting rich selling the stuff to the small group of people want to take the Heroin.

    LEGALIZE EVERYTHING
If you want to hurt yourself with something unhealthy for you, you should have the right to do it, assuming you're an adult and you're aware of the risks. At worst I'd suggest a surgeon general warning of the risks.
Never drank alcohol and I haven't had a caffeinated drink in 7 years. I just love FREEDOM!

You should really re-word this question. Anyways, we have to trust that people will be responsible with their alcohol & energy drinks. We trust that people won't become stumbling, abusive, belligerent monsters with no sense of reasoning or self control. But hey, the public voted to keep alcohol legal 70 years ago, so they will be the ones paying with their lives, with or without the added caffeine, sugar and guarana. Anyone else but the public banning it will just lead to the mixing of energy drinks and liquor anyways.

They're fine as long as you don't abuse them.

No...but they do need to be...renamed and or re-branded. They are marketed as energy drinks, yet no real athlete would touch one with a javelin let alone actually drink one. They are marketed on the pretence of giving you a boost, which...they do not. At least definitely not up to the standards as eating a jam sandwich or having a glass of banana and grape smoothie...

They are effectively just Cocacola with extra Caffeine. Which is pseudo energy.

I like the taste of them, but I feel that the marketing firms have put out a lot of incorrect information out there that really is not correct in the slightest.

Try eating porridge with extra honey and full fat milk. Then for lunch a pasta salad with yoghurt for afters. Replace coffee with fruit smoothies, for instance banana and grape..or banana and what ever. Not only will you notice your cholesterol drop off the scale but you'll also notice that you have more energy ^_^

That is...if you don't cheat and actually grab a banana and some grapes... >.> the salt content in some of those 'healthy' meals is... astounding.
