Should "under God" be taken out of the Pledge of Allegiance?

Church and state should remain separate. If church becomes part of government, what would the official religion be? Catholicism? Baptists? Muslim?
This country was founded by enlightened men, some of who were atheists, most notably Benjamin Franklin. It is a cornerstone of our democracy. Church and state should remain separate.

Why the "gripe" about having God in the Pledge? It's becuse of what it represents. And that applies to both of us. For you it affirms your personal belief that A.) Your God is actually real. B.) This country is Christian. For me it represents A.) That Christianity is publicly endorsed as the religion of this country. B.) Since it's mostly children who say the pledge it's a means of indoctrination and a method of establishing a "norm" in Christianity's favor. There is absolutely no need for it in the pledge. And it's not just me saying this. The actually author agrees. Francis Bellamy wrote the Pledge in 1891 as follows: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all" Francis was a Christian Baptist minister to boot. He didn't think it should be added to the pledge and for 50 years the pledge was recited without the words "Under God". It was not until 1954 during the "Red Scare" that the words were added. Fear was a powerful weapon used to great effect during this time in America to get alot of things done, the adding of the words "Under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance is just one such case.

I've never meet a common Christian who refered to their god as anything other then "God", the same way they refer to their holy book as "The Bible" which literally means "the Book". This is derived from arrogance. See I'm what you'd call a atheist. However "atheist" of the old days was applied to any individual that did not believe in the religion of the majority. Meaning that pagans back in Christian dominated Rome were called "atheist" stemming from the arrogant self-centered belief that their God was infact real and was the only one and that pagans thus believed in nothing. That culture has carried over with Christians still calling their god "God" and their holy book "The Bible". So when the pledge says "under God" and Christians use this as "proof" that this country is a Christian nation, or attempts at it's removal is a "attack on Christianity" what am I or for that matter anyone to think the word "God" in the pledge refers to. Christians love to say their defending religious freedom and say that "God" in the pledge is for all beliefs which is either a bald face lie or just a show of their supreme ignorance of other religions.

Or just not mention it at all like the founding fathers did they saw no need to put it in the pledge which was meant for everyone.

Yes. Religion is strictly a private matter.

The country did well without it being there before it wasn't added til the fifties since then the pledge no longer truly represents the American people but merely a fraction of the whole which only causes us to divide instead of unite as was the original purpose of the pledge in the first place, sad isn't it?
