The U.S. government is getting closer to effectively banning junk food in public schools -- and most parents think it's a great idea, according to a new poll, Reuters reports. The Kids' Safe and Healthful Foods Project's poll reveals that most people do not think chips, soda and candy bars should be sold in school vending machines or at school stores.

junk food at school

"What has changed in the last 30 years is that the childhood obesity epidemic has more than tripled," said Jessica Donze Black, a dietician who leads the Kids' Safe and Healthful Foods Project, according to Reuters. "The school environment has also changed... Today, there are a lot of other places throughout the day that compete with kids eating a healthy school meal."

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is expected to release new nutritional guidelines by June, updating standards from way back in 1979. Eighty percent of the 1,010 adults polled said they would support nutritional standards limiting the calories, fat and sodium in such foods. At a time when one-third of U.S. children are overweight or obese, healthier vending machines seem like a no-brainer to us. How about you?

This is a portion plate, the school's version of a vegetable serving is pizza, so sure, portion wise my picture would be more "fitting" but that food is reheated and more than usually fried and it's tasteless because apparently, the most dangerous thing in that blob of grease, is a sprinkle of salt.

I am not into junk food but I am into freedom. Each no is one slip closer to a totalitarian type mentality and having an Eastern European background nothing is worth the slippery slope that a no would bring. Train the children what to eat. Give them boundaries. Allow them to experiment and grow up.

it all depends on the child.....besides, a little junk food won't hurt...Obesity is done over a lifetime of wrong choices because they couldn't control themselves.

    Anyway....just leave them be...i'm 19

In my high school you weren't suppose to use the vending machines until after hours. So that meant for the most part the after school sports kids and marching band members (like myself )were typically the ones that would get the most use of them. The kids that were being active and would just like a honey bun at the end of the day. That so much to ask?? lol. We didn't really have soda machines though, just propel and Gatorade so I guess that was their way of limiting us.

I cannot believe there are that many No votes on this question. Kids must be voting. You guys need to eat balanced meals, no sugary snacks and sodas. When I was in school I had a meat and two vegetables, NO dessert, and milk. And there were no soda machines. If you were thirsty, there were water fountains. Yeah, I know. Sounds cruel doesn't it. I was thin and healthy and had lots of energy. I wish I had never seen my first bite of fast food, and I sure wish I had never gotten hooked on sodas. I might still be thin and full of energy.

My definition of good nutrition is based on the food pyramid - a certain number of foods in each group eaten each day. It's kind of hard to do, but it's so worth it if you can find a way to do it.

The big problem is that many people just do not understand the question. Or if they do, they do not understand the roll of the FEDERAL government in the daily lives of We The People.
    The question:
"Should the U.S. Ban Junk Food at School?" When you see "U. S." it means United States, which is the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.
Seeing as how there is no allowance in the Constitution for the FEDERAL government (U. S./United States) to make rules for our schools one must look to the 10th. Amendment to the Constitution.
Amendment 10: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
You have to understand the legal and Constitutional meanings of words in order to understand our roll and the roll of government in our lives.

Federal government - State government - I think it's apples and oranges when it comes to this question, but I do lean toward thinking this should be on the State level. The less we have the morons in Washington in our lives the better.

You as an individual have more control over your State legislators. That is the way the founders wanted it. Hench the 9th and 10th Amendments. The People are still supposed (I say, Supposed) to be the ultimate authority. The States are and have always been individual Republics with their own State Constitutions. Article 4, Section 4. The Original 13 demanded it be that way. That is why they gave (I repeat, THEY GAVE) the "Federal" government very limited authority. Which DOES NOT include ANY authority over our schools.

Thank you. I very much appreciate your comment.
My comments have not been directed at whether junk food should be banned in school or not. The important thing is it should not be up to the Federal Government (U. S./United States) to make that decision. It is totally the responsibility of the States and the People. I liken it to Vampires. Once you give them permission to enter your home, they can return whenever they want and take anything you own. Including your very life. In this case it is control of our children. Through apathy, bribery and fraud we have allowed federal government control of our schools. A plank of the Communist Manifesto. Not something found in the Constitution or any Amendment to the constitution.
Sorry for rambling on but people just do not understand the implications of allowing the federal government to do this.
    Thanks again! :-)

take away the food temptations that kids love so much, but are also really unhealthy..high in fat, sugar, and salt

replace them with fruits, veggies, water, low-fat milk and the children will grumble at first, but will feel better with the healthier choices

Our school has lost so much revenue from abandoning soda machines that funding to academic extracurricular activities has dwindled and kids that wish to compete and excel are having to do so out of pocket. Who is being hurt when a child, a citizen like anyone else, makes a choice to spend their money on a unwise choice? Moreover, if we use the money made from that unwise choice to help foster programs of learning, then we should ask ourselves who gets hurt when we cut the ability of that person to make an unwise choice.

The federal government should have no say. Central Government control of education is a plank of the communist manifesto. It should be left up to the parents and each individual school district. Period!

I think with the obesity crisis that we are seeing among young people which can lead to huge problems down the line, it is something that we should seriously consider. Particularly young children do not always comprehend the consequences of their actions and the effect that having another cheeseburger can have on the rest of their lives. To me, when I see a 200 pound four year old, my first thought is, that is child abuse by negligent parents.

Although I was by no means a 200 lb four year old, I have had sever eating issues since childhood. My parents tried very hard to help me....therapy, healthy food but you know what I did? I got the garbage at school and other places when they were not around. I remember spending lunch money on ice cream and candy in like fourth grade.....it was sadly allowed and my parents had no idea. Their best efforts were not working because I found ways around it. It is definitely not always the parents fault. I must say, I wish I had gotten better control of my issues as a child. It is without a doubt (at least in my mind) as much of a mental illness as alcoholism or other eating disorders. I still stuggle severely to this day. :-(

Junk foods should be banned because they are extremely bad for health, specially for the teenagers when most of the harmonal changes occur! They may have to pay all their lives for consuming too much junk food!

People are always pushing for better more nutricious school lunches. But in schools with vending machines only half the students eat those nutritional lunches.

We didn't have any vending machines in the high school where I grew up, and we survived.
We ate the lunch from the cafeteria or brought our own. That is what kids should be doing today as well. I did not have a stay at home mom to fix my lunch either if I wanted something different than the cafeteria offered I had to pack it the night before.

Parents and kids these days are just lazy and want everything to be easy so they throw money at the kids and the kids buy junk because that is what they are used to. Most families rarely fix dinner. Some kids at 18 years old do not know how to cook a grilled cheese sandwich. So it isn't any surprise they head for a coke and a candy bar at the vending machine instead of a lunch from the cafeteria.
So by removing the vending machines at least kids will get one decently nutricious meal a day.

I admit they are not what they used to be since they now consider pizza a vegetable but stil better than what the kids would get from the vending machines.

How is that a problem that can't be solved with hands on parenting and not out right banning? My daughter chooses good things like the salad bar and treats after if she wants. I taught her it's work first play later, food for fuel and treats later. People need to raise their own kids to make healthier choices. How is it the schools/government responsibility is my question. For every seemingly innocent little "freedom" taken away a whole truck load of freedoms that matter to you are soon to follow.
