Should the U.S. Ban Junk Food at School? (Most Parents Think So)

The U.S. government is getting closer to effectively banning junk food in public schools -- and most parents think it's a great idea, according to a new poll, Reuters reports. The Kids' Safe and Healthful Foods Project's poll reveals that most people do not think chips, soda and candy bars should be sold in school vending machines or at school stores.

junk food at school

"What has changed in the last 30 years is that the childhood obesity epidemic has more than tripled," said Jessica Donze Black, a dietician who leads the Kids' Safe and Healthful Foods Project, according to Reuters. "The school environment has also changed... Today, there are a lot of other places throughout the day that compete with kids eating a healthy school meal."

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is expected to release new nutritional guidelines by June, updating standards from way back in 1979. Eighty percent of the 1,010 adults polled said they would support nutritional standards limiting the calories, fat and sodium in such foods. At a time when one-third of U.S. children are overweight or obese, healthier vending machines seem like a no-brainer to us. How about you?

Thank you. Then I stand with my original response, it's up to the parents in the individual school districts to push for change in their school programs or they can pack their kids lunch.

But most individuals would argue students do not have the same freedoms as adults. For example, many schools require students to wear particular uniforms or forbid them from wearing clothes with any kind of text on them. Freedom of speech is in the bill of rights; freedom to eat unhealthy foods is not. Thoughts?

The libs think people are too stupid to make decisions for themselves, so they feel they must mandate their way of thinking. Education is understanding options, making decisions and accepting responsibility for those decisions, good or bad.

I disagree. Conservatives think THEY always know what's best. That is why they are anti-choice, anti-gay marriage, anti-stem cell reasearch. Liberals think that if you give most children the option between a salty/sweet snack for 75 cents and a semi-nutritious meal for $3 they will naturally choose he snack. As someone who used to eat McDonalds every day as a child, I understand that if you allow a child to eat whatever they want they will invariably choose the best tasting thing. It is not the child's responsibility to make sure they eat healthy. The parents send their children to school with the understanding that while in school, the teachers and administration will see to the child's needs.

And you believe that the federal government (U. S./UNITED STATES) should have the power to control what all schools do or allow?
I went to school before the department of education took over total control. How about you? I got a lot of my education before people had to read a warning label to tell them that coffee was hot or you should not use a power lawn mower to trim your hedges.
  • Jacksane Dr. John 2013/05/02 23:36:44
    Jacksane
Absolutely. If not the federal government, who will control schools? Every day I see parents buy their children energy drinks. Obviously parents can't be trusted to keep their kids healthy.
As far as your generation compared to my own, I can tell you that I often deal with older individuals who seem unable to read a sign/label to save their lives. Yes, people should have freedoms that the government cannot infringe on. However, I don't believe that when children are sent to PUBLIC school we should neglect their dietary needs and leave them to their own devices. Again, any child is going to choose to eat candy and soda over broccoli. We have evolved to seek sweet foods, and children are not mature enough to manage their own nutritional needs. In fact, most college students I have met are barely able to meet their own nutritional needs. I'm not saying ban junk food altogether, but at least don't put it right where kids can get it. It's like letting a crack dealer hang around the school and saying "oh, the kids will make the right choice not to talk to buy that". Maybe, but why risk it?
  • Dr. John Jacksane 2013/05/03 00:52:46
    Dr. John
Your problem is you believe that it is the responsibility of the federal government, that it is not your own responsibility. Not your community's responsibility.

Your words: "Yes, people should have freedoms that the government cannot infringe on."

So you are OK with the federal government infringing on your Right to eat what you want? You are OK with what bloomberg is doing in New York? How about what car you can buy? What clothes you can wear? Who you can hang out with? how many slices of pizza you can have? How YOU raise YOUR own children?
I raised two children. They both had "good" food and "junk" food growing up. They have both grown up very well and have chosen (by their own volition) to eat mostly "good" food. They didn't need help from the federal government. We taught them to choose for themselves. They chose, wisely.

Just where is the line drawn?
You want to make a difference? Start with your own family, your own community and leave the federal government out of it.

    1) I don't see it as "not my responsibility" but rather as "I can't be responsible for every kid in America and their parents are idiots". Sometimes the common man doesn't know what's in their best interests. Part of the governments job is to work in the mutual interest of all Americans.
    2) Your children were given a choice, all things being equal. At the school I went to, the junk food in the vending machines was about half the price of the milk, juice, fruit, etc. The vending machines also did not share the long line that the main cafeteria had, meaning more time to study. So all things weren't equal.
    3. Tell me this, do you oppose gay marriage? Do you oppose a man marrying a goat? Do you oppose a grown man marrying a twelve year old girl? If you oppose any of these (and I sincerely hope you oppose the latter two) then you realize we can't have EVERY freedom. Some things are bad for us and society, so they're illegal or banned. I agree that fully functioning adults (21+) should be able to marry any other consenting adult, drink, buy porn, w/e. I disagree that we should make unhealthy foods readily available to children when they aren't under their parents supervision. As another example, do you think it is parents responsibility to ensure their child's safety while the child is at school? We trust schools to look after out kids while they're learning.
  • Dr. John Jacksane 2013/05/03 20:40:00

You are right. It is expected that our children be protected and well taught at school. I am not arguing against laws regarding the things you mention. But, to believe that any central government (in our case, the federal government) can be trusted with making laws for all of us is wrong. It has no Constitutional authority to interfere in the schools of the States, Counties, Cities or communities. It's the same with gay marriage, goat marriage, porn or 12 year old marriage. Those are all things that should be taken care of at the State or local level. Have you read the federal Constitution? Are you familiar with Art. 1, Sec. 8? Are you familiar with the 9th and 10th Amendments? Have you read your State's Constitution?
A "central" government can only make ONE law for all people, but The People of each State are (at least slightly) different from The People of the other States. That is why one State may have laws that differ slightly from their neighbor's State. We are 50 Nations with 50 governments plus a "federal" government of limited and enumerated powers. It is one of the things that make us unique among the other nations of the world.
Once again I suggest that you read the Founding Documents. The Constitutions, both federal and State. The Federalist AND especially the Anti-Federalist papers.

The problem with that is that not every state knows or is working towards the best interest of their people. Take schools that don't teach evolution. Not only do they severely deprive those students of a key understanding of one of the most important concepts in science, but they also drag the U.S. down by lowering the overall scientific knowledge of our country and therefore making us look pathetic compared to countries like Finland, or even China. I personally care about America being the greatest country, but that requires us to have a powerful government, and for our children to be fed properly.

Um how about you bring back recess and make PE into actual Physical Education rather than sitting on the bleachers texting? I was pissed in hs when they took away my regular sodas and I had to show up early just to buy straight from the truck or go to the gas station down the street. Now they want to take the kids' candy? In hs all you can do is sneak a bag of chips or a Snickers during class unlike college where I've had classmates eat whole pizzas during class. They complained about health and gave us processed foods that were cooked, frozen, cooked again, and frozen again before being recooked. Then they had the nerve to serve our milk in plastic bags. No matter what you do it won't stop people from going home and pigging out there. At least in private school they made our food themselves and it was fresh and then we were required to go out for recess. It's ok though, that's why you have fellow students who sell candy out of their backpacks.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, your body, your choice. You have every right to inform people of what can and will happen if they put certain substances into their body but you should not have to right to force people to abstain from doing so.

Overprotective people will say yes. People who aren't thinking will say yes.

What will qualify as "junk food"? Chips? Fries? Donuts I can get, but technically almost any food would count. There's chemicals in everything. Not even vegetables could count then.

How could classes have parties? What would be the point? Nothing of interest would be allowed.

I use at least two thick napkins to suck all the grease from my "healthy veggie pizza" it's either a salad that consists of a stone age bun and 90% lettuce, or "food" that consists of 90% fat and a guaranteed future heart attack. Then they wonder why we get so unproductive fourth period...

That dish can be made for less than $10 for 20 people and some of the ingredients can be grown by the students at the school, should they start a garden.

    It builds character.
