Should Texting While Walking Be Banned?

The rumor mill went a bit crazy today, as reports circulated that Fort Lee, N.J., had banned texting while walking. The shock! The horror! But Thomas Ripoli -- chief of the Fort Lee Police Department -- tells msnbc.com that people who are nabbed texting while walking in Fort Lee are issued a $54 ticket ... but only if they also happen to be jaywalking at the same time.

texting walking

While the town has cracked down on pedestrians since three people were killed and more than 20 were involved in accidents since the beginning this year -- issuing over 117 jaywalking tickets -- no tickets have been issued for texting while walking.

In an earlier report, Ripoli told ABC News: "It's a big distraction. Pedestrians aren’t watching where they are going and they are not aware." He makes a good point -- maybe texting while walking should be banned. At least when you're crossing the street. What do you think?

Oh sure, while we're at it, let's ban listening to music, reading a book/pamphlet, talking with a friend next to you, eating, drinking, etc. etc.

When you're walking, the ONLY thing you're allowed to do is WALK!! SEIG HEIL!!

Seriously though, driving is understandable. MAYBE even biking. But walking?? Yeah screw you if you don't like me texting and walking, I'M DOING IT. Unlike the morons that walk into poles, I can look where I'm going while texting.

Don't punish ME for the ignorance of OTHERS.

Or maybe someone who's job it is to drive a bus, should be paying attention as well. You're responsible for the lives of everyone on your bus as well as anyone outside of the bus, if you aren't prepared for the responsibilities let someone else have the job. Everyone that texts while walking isn't some blithering idiot that can't see in front of them, but even for the few that are, I would like to think someone paid to drive a bus should be able to see something 2 feet in front of them, even if it is only for the safety of those on the bus.

If they're not using common sense, that's their problem, not the public's. The last thing we need is to give cops another reason to whip out the ticket booklets.

It becomes the public's problem when these idjits step out in front of their cars. I'd just as soon have the ban...

When they're crossing the road, that's the only time I can understand it not be allowed. But on sidewalks? Sorry but if they fall into a manhole, that's their fault and lesson learned.

We truly need to ban living. If there was absolutely no life on earth, all problems would be totally solved. (sarcasm completely intended)

And running over a pedestrian who was texting at the time should be an automatic dismissal of any careless driving charges.

i think that's just dumb. why the need for more laws? it's not my fault people walk into the middle of the street while staring at their phone. have the common sense of looking at what's ahead of you every few seconds. it works for me.

It should be like basketball -- you can take two steps but no more, and you're allowed to use a pivot foot.

Hmm, I agree that is should be more ENCOURAGED to stop and text, but to make it illegal is taking it a bit far. Maybe in certain circumstances like crossing the road, but if someone can't pay attention to their surroundings while they walk and text, that's their own problem, not the public's.
