The rumor mill went a bit crazy today, as reports circulated that Fort Lee, N.J., had banned texting while walking. The shock! The horror! But Thomas Ripoli -- chief of the Fort Lee Police Department -- tells msnbc.com that people who are nabbed texting while walking in Fort Lee are issued a $54 ticket ... but only if they also happen to be jaywalking at the same time.

texting walking

While the town has cracked down on pedestrians since three people were killed and more than 20 were involved in accidents since the beginning this year -- issuing over 117 jaywalking tickets -- no tickets have been issued for texting while walking.

In an earlier report, Ripoli told ABC News: "It's a big distraction. Pedestrians aren’t watching where they are going and they are not aware." He makes a good point -- maybe texting while walking should be banned. At least when you're crossing the street. What do you think?

Oh sure, while we're at it, let's ban listening to music, reading a book/pamphlet, talking with a friend next to you, eating, drinking, etc. etc.

When you're walking, the ONLY thing you're allowed to do is WALK!! SEIG HEIL!!

Seriously though, driving is understandable. MAYBE even biking. But walking?? Yeah screw you if you don't like me texting and walking, I'M DOING IT. Unlike the morons that walk into poles, I can look where I'm going while texting.

Don't punish ME for the ignorance of OTHERS.

No, because very much of that behavior will render a lesson of its own to the texter--a lesson of the Fall-Down-Go-Boom variety.

That's not enough reason to make it illegal and punishable by law.

Sweetie, if I wanted saving, I'd do it myself, not let Big Brother and Uncle Sam send his pigs out to write tickets for me minding my own business.

It's like this is what life has become.. that there is nothing else.. people not enjoying each other's company or surroundings, being in the moment.

I'm sick of hearing other people's loud conversations too while they are shopping and not putting anything in their baskets.. because they can't even seem to concentrate on THAT.

Loud talkers on cell phones in public

While I can agree with that, it's a bit far to make it punishable by law, unless maybe it's texting while crossing the street.

No but if you get run over by a car/truck while jay-walking then no matter the texter is totally at fault regardless. Also you have to pay for your own medical bills etc...you want to walk/jay-walk while texting then stupidity has a price. In my city a stupid 18 yr old girl was so busy texting while walking she walked into the side of a truck that was turning (his right of way) bounced off and fell under the rear wheels and was crushed to death.....stupid is as stupid does....right there she won the Darwin award...how do you not see a 5 ton truck in front of you and worse run into it.

That's the worst time to do it along with driving and texting. you are not focused at all and you be hitted by a car, bus, truck, and or semi-trucks are grabage trucks.

Agree" but dude I can walk and text and pay attention to where I'm headed; but even the perfect ones fall short sometimes and slip good buddy, therefore we suffer our punishment for being "tupid" just that one time. What I'm saying pardner; is don't boast or bask in the wind about what you can do and what hasn't happened to you 'yet' because you are talking up your negative karma; for something to happen to you. Just because you sound so sure of yourself.
I respect your opinion and totally agree with everything you've said; but its still that. 'one little time' we must allow for ourselves to do a ding-dong thing that cause us to look stupidly at ourselves, and hope no one saw it" ;-))
