I told my kids they don't have to recite it unless they want to. If there's any trouble about it, the teacher can take it up with me.
It's never been an issue. My kids don't recite it.

Her qualm was with how young children are forced to say it without really understanding what it is they're pledging to do, and I agree. I think kids should be taught the historocity of the Pledge of Allegiance first and then recite it if they want when they have a keen understanding of what sort of oath they're taking.

Plus, the founding fathers had nothing to with the pledge. :)
Their elementary school had its own school pledge about being respectful and hardworking. They both gladly recited that pledge.
It's never been an issue. My kids don't recite it.
