Should Students Be Expelled Over 'Date-Rape Drug' Party?

Police suspect that a date-rape drug was used to spike drinks at a Central Washington University party that sickened 12 students, mostly girls -- and now the students involved may be expelled.

"We suspect. ... that these drugs were introduced to these students," local Police Chief Scott Ferguson told ABC News over the weekend. "Probably without their knowledge."

Police are investigating whether the girls at the Roslyn, Wash., party -- 30 miles away from campus -- were given the date-rape drug Rohypnol, more commonly known as "roofies."

"Many of the victims are women and police want to know if they were targeted specifically," Ferguson added.

CWU freshman Chris Unger said that after the students started getting sick, people kept warning others not to drink "out of the red cups."

"They all had red cups, people were saying, 'Don't drink out of the red cups, don't drink out of the red cups.'"

And while it's still not clear if a date-rape drug was passed around, the students involved may be expelled.

"Central University has a student conduct code that students are held to no matter where they are in the world," Linda Schactler, the director of public affairs at the university, told ABC.

"What we are going to do is talk to each student and there might be repercussions," said Schactler. "If they were underage and they were drinking that's against state law and university policy."

Students' punishments could range from mandatory alcohol education class to suspension or expulsion.

If cops can find evidence that students did this on purpose, expulsion will be the least of their problems.

If someone intentionally spiked the drinks with date-rape drugs, then they should be expelled, fined, and jailed. Then, they should be put on the sex offenders list, since that's what they are. The victims shouldn't be expelled, though. However, if they were underage and drinking, they should get the appropriate punishment for their actions, as should those who allowed anyone underage to drink.

If they did it, then it was at least attempted rape. Not only should they be expelled - Charges should be pressed

Absolutely. I personally witnessed 3 different people who took rufies voluntarily and wound up in a coma. A lighter to their arms didn't wake them and w/out medical intervention, they'd be dead. Not to mention, the blackout period before hand. That's like giving someone general anesthesia as a "prank". That is not a joke. They should be not only expelled but also criminally charged.

If they gave any drug to an unknowing person, they should not only be expelled, but should also be brought up on criminal charges.

The student (or non-student) responsible for slipping these drugs should be punished with the full weight of the law. Putting a sleeping pill in a woman's drink means whoever the offender intended to have sex with her unconscious body, a rape no matter how you paint it.

The attendees of the party should probably be given a stern lecture by their parents, including the female ones.

Students sign a document saying they will adhere to specific behavioral guidelines. If a student put their name to that document they should be held to that standard. If they were drinking underage, that is enough for expulsion, especially if there is reason to believe illicit drugs were also involved. Anyone who tries to coddle these students are part of the problem.

Ugh you just can't trust people... >_< Freaking sick bastards. (assuming this is all confirmed and an investigation was carried out) the people drugging drinks should be expelled, obviously, and face criminal charges. The victims, if they're underage drinkers, also deserve some punishment for breaking the law, but not suspension or anything too serious.

When the facts are known, and the drug identified, then whoever perped this needs to be charged and convicted. It could have even been fatal to one or more who ingested the spiked drinks.

and should register as a Sex Offender except the victims or the people who were sick.

Shouldn't have used a date-drug if you dont want to be called and known as the Sex Offender. Good luck finding a well paid job.

IMO this is one of the most important facts of the story:

"However, not one person chose to call 911," Ferguson told KOMO.

I think everyone involved should be placed on immediate academic probation during the investigation. Once the facts are discovered then those responsible for introducing the drug into the party should be expelled and those who knew about the drug, but did nothing should remain on academic probation for the rest of the school year.

As much as I don't agree with the use of the date-rape drug-- those students who feel the need to use it-- are probably the students also more in need of STAYING in School.

Taking the stupid away from education just breeds more stupidity.

I disagree-- if they have any chance of gaining knowledge and halting their stupid ways-- it will be through maturity and education. Why remove them from having a chance to learn?

Adolescents needs guidance, structure and authority.

They need to go out in the real world to learn that their actions have real world consequences. Protecting them in an educational environment does not give them real life experience
