Should Student Be Fined $600 for Cursing?

In the old days, a teacher might have slapped your hand with a ruler for cursing at school. Now, they just slap you with a fine.

In October, a Mesquite, Texas, high school student was fined $340 after a teacher reported her to campus police for shouting foul language at another student, CBS reported.

But it gets even worse. The student, who denies she said the words loud enough for the class to hear, never showed up for court, adding penalties that brought the fine to more than $600.

That's one expensive four-letter word.

“Unfortunately, people say things that they might later regret or say things out of emotion and, just like if you said it in a public place and someone complained, you could be issued a ticket for it," Mesquite Independent School District spokesperson Ian Halperin told CBS. "There are laws against it."

Halperin says student fines aren’t unusual, but can be avoided in some cases.

"You know, for first offenders the fine sometimes can be waived," he said. "Parents do need to understand that these are tickets issued by the police and they do need to follow up with them."

But $600 is a lot of money -- and guess who's going to wind up footing the bill? Not little foul-mouthed Junior, but Mom and Dad.

It is freedom of speech. It is just a word. Are police fined when they curse at suspects?

For all we know, the teachers and other staff probably cuss too. I cuss sometimes at school but not a lot to get noticed, but other kids they cuss in every bucking sentence. 4 years ago they would just send you to the office to get licks, but fines, too excessive.

Maybe, it's time people start realizing, there's a time and a place for cursing. But their parents will probably get stuck paying the fine.

Schools should punish them for cursing but fines are over the top.

I agree, there should be consequences but I believe cursing falls under freedom of speech. So the school could fine them, but I don't believe police can or should. Also the parents are the one's who'll pay the fine. And it's not fair to blame the parents. They may teach their kids not to curse but kids do it anyway. They should probably just get detention.

We have rights, it's not like they can super glue our mouths shut, and instead of making the parents pay big fines for what the kid said, they should make them do something like community service, it's not their parents' fault.

Why don't they fine teachers $6oo dollars for every failing student?

Adults need to earn respect. Words are not that important. Swearing is just a less effective way of expressing an exclamative. It's not something to get bent out of shape about. Better to teach the children how to be truly, artfully articulate - rather than hold them to ransom.

Good to know Freedom of Speech is only held dear when it isn't offensive to someone.

swearing is only powerful because people fuss about it. if nobody fussed then it would disappear.

if I went round screaming 'copulation' or 'faeces' or 'vagina', what would be the difference?

This is just another way for liberal government to separate you from your money. Maybe students wouldn't feel the need to curse so much if they weren't being brain washed by their hippie, socialist, Obama loving, dope smoking teachers.

Oh please now your even blaming Obama for kids cursing. Besides, isn't it usually conservatives who make such a big fuss over cursing. I'm a liberal, but I don't want kids or anyone fined for exorcising free speech. But rude behavior in class should be handled by detention not huge fines.

That's a good point. Children also swear at other children. As a countermeasure, I've taken the initiative to teach my children clever, articulate alternatives to swearing. As a result, they can instantly reduce such a foul-mouthed person to the vulgar, uncouth, inarticulate being their swearing has proclaimed them to be. This leaves the offender, red-eared with shame, and loathe to swear at my children again, for fear of a truly artful and poignant public redressing. Parents and teachers need to take countermeasures. Create a competition for children to find artful alternatives to swearing. Show them how powerful words can be ... and grade them on it!! :)

I voted yes for the ideal, but the fine itself is a little excessive. Some people dont' know any better if they were raised in a family with foul mouthed parents, and/or watch garbage on television... a 30-45 dollar fine sounds a lot more reasonable.

It's only foul if you're offended by it! If you're not scared of words, they can't hurt you. Swearing is childish - but it's fun. Sometimes it just says exactly what you feel! I'm a great believer in learning to be articulate enough that you don't need to swear - because then it's SO much more powerful when you do!! :D

I like the idea of fines, but they should rather fine them 30-45 dollars, not something of 300! some people have been brought up with excesive swearing, and not saying it's ok but to quit the habit sometimes isn't so easy for some compared to others, again not condoning it but just giving the reality that it's not always that simply easy quickly worked out..

To the idoits out there, fining poor manners is good, not 600.. (but that was mostly for the court cost also), Poor manners and having a Sewer mouth is not freedom of speech- if you idoits ready the Admsndments you know there are guidelines, and spilling your trash is not one of them.
Yes , fine with in reason and tollance (don't be over sentive), maybe 10 per incedent ?
I voted Yes because of the idoits that don't think, those people are why we have kids that are this way, bad, poor manners, and disrespect this Country.
