Should Smoking Be Allowed Outdoors?

The great outdoors has become the last remaining option for many Americans in need of a cigarette break -- but even this might be going up in smoke.

Chicago and San Francisco already have initiatives to curb secondhand smoke in public places. Now, New York City will ban smoking in parks, beaches, boardwalks, pedestrian plazas and other public spaces beginning on May 23, Reuters reports.

"Frederick Law Olmsted hailed public parks as the 'lungs of the city' -- a haven where one could escape the overcrowded, noisy and polluted streets," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a statement after signing the legislation on Tuesday. "We need to ensure that our public spaces provide just that -- a healthy place in which to relax and enjoy the surroundings."

New Yorkers are not allowed to smoke in restaurants and bars. They are permitted to light up on sidewalks and streets as well as in parking lots and in their homes, although most landlords don't allow it.

Beginning on May 23, any New Yorker who's caught smoking in a "banned" public space will be given a warning, followed by a $50 fine.

Needless to say, the city's smokers are running out of places to puff -- and some are none to happy about it.

"This is tyranny, rationalized by a lie," Audrey Silk, director of New York Citizens Lobbying Against Smoker Harassment, told Reuters. "That secondhand smoke is harming anybody outside is an absolute lie."

Just because you can smell a cigarette doesn't mean you are breathing a lot of second hand smoke in. People living in most cities breath in the equivalent of two packs of cigarettes a day from pollution.

i think preventing smokers from getting their fix could prove much more dangerous to the public's health than secondhand smoke. tread carefully, bloomberg.

i believe in freedom but some kids watch people smoke and idolize them i know this because this is how me and my freinds started to smoke luckily we got a chance to quit before it got too bad plus the fact that its a horrible way to get rid of stress because these days its costs alot of money to buy a good pack of cigarettes

.... I've got no use for cigarette's, but those who believe that we should just continue on with writing Law-after-Law and Penalty-after-Penalty haven't a clue where they're headed and what they are doing to our Country.

.... you want to bust 'em for littering when they toss a butt on the ground .. okay .. prohibiting an outdoor habit, crazy ... just crazy

Although I generally despise cigarette smoke, I have many friends and family who enjoy smoking. As long as people are polite about their habbit, then I have no qualms about it, but from a mere freedom issue ... it should never be banned outside.

I do not care who smokes and who does not, it's an individual problem. My opinion - if you do not like cigarette smoke, get away and inhale the smoke of burnt fuel, in which you are no longer able to blame someone specific ...=))))

    Exactly.

For all of those highly opposed to outdoor smokers and want to ban it altogether, how about taking a journey on the Interstates and test the emissions you breathe coming thru your Heating/Air Conditioning Ducts in your Automobile from the thousands of 18 Wheelers delivering your daily goods. Perhaps once you understand the dangers, someone smoking a Cigarette is not nearly as deadly.

~~ I live in NYC and when they do something about the air pollution blowing over us from Linden and Newark NJ and from NYC busses~ cabs and other vehicles ~ then perhaps they can convince us they are seriously worried about our health and not the FINES and taxes, they can accrue to the coffers of the City!!!

....what the hell?! If you can't smoke outdoors where can you smoke? I mean, I'm not a smoker, and I'm appalled by the slow suicide of it, but I have no right to tell other people what do to with their bodies. This is ridiculous. Thankfully, people here would never go for that.
