Should 'Seventeen' Stop Photoshopping? (One Teen Wants Them To)

Advocates have been struggling to eliminate airbrushing and photoshopping for as long as it's been around, but there's only one group that holds sway over what a magazine ultimately decides to do: its consumers. Julia Bluhm, a 13-year-old girl, started a petition on Change.org asking Seventeen magazine to cut back on photo manipulation. She's not even asking them to cut it out completely -- just once a month. That's all.

Bluhm wrote, "The media tells us that 'pretty' girls are impossibly thin with perfect skin. Here's what lots of girls don't know. Those 'pretty women' that we see in magazines are fake. They're often photoshopped, air-brushed, edited to look thinner, and to appear like they have perfect skin. A girl you see in a magazine probably looks a lot different in real life. That's why I'm asking Seventeen magazine to commit to printing one unaltered — real — photo spread per month." Is that too much to ask, Seventeen magazine? You decide.

I've been reading Seventeen for years and I've observed this years ago...here they are telling girls to be happy about their bodies, then they line their pages with unreastically airbrished models. It's kind of contradictory. Not saying they should completely eliminate airbrushing, that they should just keep it realistic.

If they don't completely stop using it, they could at least not use it as much. No one looks that perfect in real life. Those pictures are really unrealistic.

yeah, but skinny anorexics die young, and often suffer from low self esteem. At least people who chose to be plus size are comfortable in their skin. You dont have to have an eating disorder to be beautiful, and not all skinny people are beautiful. Youre looking at the big picture, not the important parts that make it up.

They should all stop completely. It's giving kids a goal that they can never reach. Probably also contributes to a lot of teen depression.

i think that all magazines should cut a lot of it out. i always knew it happened and that those girls didnt actually look like that, but it really hit me when i saw Adele on the cover of Vogue and i was like that doesnt even look like her
    adele front cover
    compared to:
    adele
even though that picture is probably still airbrushed it looks a lot more like her than the vouge one.

yeah, thats photoshop. and personally i like her thicker, its more real and it shows that you can still be absolutely gorgeous and not anorexic! :D

Well, they didn't make her look anorexic, but yes, she does show that you can be overweight and still gorgeous. She does look nicer with a full face.

haha! no... i wasnt saying that she looked anorexic, but a lot of models and people like that look anorexic. and yes, i think Adele is absolutely gorgeous and i like her with all the fat she has. and i mean its not like shes fat, but shes... thick! :D haha

LOL Sorry, I should have assumed but there are some doozies on here who would call that 'dangerously thin' or something like that.

I'm just as guilty of stereotyping, because I do consider Adele fat (but beautiful) and I actually said something did or did not make someone look anorexic (and I should know better than most that anorexia isn't always stick thin considering I'm over 170 lbs and my psychiatrist refers to me as anorexic).

No, I'm only 5'3"... I was diagnosed because I used to be over 350 lbs and then became obsessed with weight-loss, calorie-counting and restricting (to the point of ending up in the hospital).
    I don't think you're stereotypical or judgemental. :-)

Yeah, why not? It's just for 1 magazine per month. Seventeen always tries to give beauty tips and tells girls to be happy about themselves, yet they plop a fake photo of a "pretty" girl on the cover. I don't mind it that much, but a lot of girls do, so I don't think once a month would hurt them (Seventeen) or their sales. If she was asking them to cut it out completely, well, that would be ridiculous :P

if it's illegale for athletes to get steriodes to improve their preformance than phto shop should be cut back as well because then models arent't exactly doing there job. They are supposed to be modeling, not letting the computor do the modeling instead, plus it gives a bad image for girls who do hang on everything magazine says. It could evoke some dieses like being belimic, and bad habbits. I am not saying that photoshop is a bad thing but they should at least let models model. ( They should also cut back autotunning for singers)

It's called "editing" and everybody does it. If Seventeen didn't edit their photos, girls would buy the magazines with the better-looking girls in it (the ones that are edited.) Its about money. Always hes been. Always will be. The same little girls bitching and moaning about how it isn't fair that the media tells them they need to look a certain way are the same girls who buy into that crap.

THEY SHOULDN'T CHANGE ANY OF THE PICTURES, LET THE PICTURES SPEAK FOR THEM SELVES. THE PHOTOGRAPHER SHOULD BE TALENTED ENOUGH TO MAKE THEM LOOK GOOD NOT COMPUTERIZED.

That was what my post was originally going to say but I thought it was too long and windy.

    You are very right.
Seventeen: "Girls feel beautiful about yourselves and be happy about your body. Now while you're doing that, excuse us while we line the magazine with pictures adds of gorgeous girls with a lot of airbrushing."

The UK is really cracking down on this. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-...
Last year I had photos taken by a professional photographer, although I think I look good for my age (60) she airbrushed them and it made me look like a 30 year old. It made me really happy but was totally unrealistic.
