Should Restaurants Charge Customers a Fine for 'Food Wastage'?

We'll admit it: Sometimes our eyes are a little bigger than our stomachs. But we don't expect to pay extra just because we're feeling a little full! The Kylin Buffet, a Chinese restaurant in England offering an all-you-can-eat buffet -- has posted a notice warning customers of a $32 for "food wastage" fine, The Daily Mail reports.

wasted food

One mom was told she had to pay the fine after she, her 10-year-old son and 6-year-old niece left two onion rings, a piece of shrimp toast and a spring roll on their plates.

"After we had our starters, we went up for our main course. But a member of staff came over and asked if we weren’t going to eat the food on our plates, and said we would have to pay an extra $32 to cover food wastage costs," Beverley Clark told the Mail. "I was furious and said we were already paying $28 for three meals, but the staff kept checking if we had eaten the food. In the end I wrapped it up in a [napkin], and put it into my bag when they weren’t looking, so it looked like we had eaten it."

After Clark complained, the restaurant deducted about $5 from her bill. "In the end I didn’t have to pay the extra charge, but it felt as though they were trying to rip me off," she said.

Sam Fung, manager at the Kylin Buffet, is standing behind the policy. "I accept that my staff should not have spoken to the family about the food on their plates more than once. However, they left a lot of food from the buffet on their plates and we have to charge for wastage of food," Fung told the Mail.

Now, we don't know how it is in England these days, but in America, you're often given way more food that you could possibly eat. And we also have a growing obesity epidemic ... if anything, restaurants should pay you for NOT finishing your food!

I've seen adults throw food and silverware in the floor because they were mad that it was taking so long for them to get their check. The restaurant was short handed and there wasn't much they could do about it when 4 kitchen workers walked out on them. We just waited patiently knowing the manager was in the kitchen with 2 waitresses trying to help out. The people next to us didn't care and eventually even threw a couple of plates with food on them in the floor. If I had been in charge I would have given them their food free of charge. And told them to NEVER COME BACK!

Of course there are. I didn't say that individual countries don't have food shortages. What I said was: "There is not a shortage of food in the WORLD, only very poor distribution of that food." Even when food is shared with many of these countries their leaders just hijack and sell it on the black market. It never gets to the people that it was intended for. Poor distribution of the worlds food supplies.

Another question that could and should have been asked along with your question is "Should customers refuse to pay a fine if they waste food". Unfortunately, the American people have given into the fantasy or illusion that enterprises such as Government Agencies, or Businesses have the authority to issue a fine to a customer or a citizen for just about any reason they come up with.
I would like to know exactly what gives either Government Agencies or Businesses the authority to issue any punishment to anybody, be it a fine or a period of their time incarcerated? Did the people either customers or citizens vote in favor of this? Were the people even consulted or informed about these issues?

According to our own "Declaration of Independents" the citizens of this nation are governed by the consent of the governed, meaning the government must present these issues to the people and allow them to decide on fines, or imprisonments for alleged crimes. Therefore, if the citizens are not consulted on the issue of fines, imprisonments or other punishments, then they obviously haven't given their consent on the issues, and thererfore government or businesses don't have the authority they imply they have. Unless the citizens or customers give their consent to either of these entities Go...

I have seen people pile their plates high with food and leave more than half of it behind. The food cannot be reused and so it must go in the trash. I always shake my head and think what a waste. Yes buffets are all you can eat, but eat what you take. If your trying something new and you don't know if you will like it, get a small amount. It is disrespectful to waste large amounts of food and the people who do it are showing their lack of manners!

the number of times you see people take a huge plate of food at a buffett, leave most of it on the plate then go upfor another plateful is staggering. such a huge waste of food. but it sounds like this fine food establishment was a little too strict in laying down the law...
if you dont like their rules - then DONT eat there....

Whaaaa? What a ridiculous concept. Why not take it further and add a weight, height and age chart and have everyone weigh in, get measured and produce age ID. If you're 30 years old and weigh 300 pounds, then the restaurant has the right to refuse service.. Now there's a real waste of time. The only good thing to come out of that is they would create "weigh-in-clerk" jobs. Just do away with all you can eat restaurants, period. Americans are so obese, it's an outdated philosophy. Gawd, I can't believe some of the stupid things merchants do to attract business. If revenues are down, they RAISE prices. It doesn't work.

they have already paid for the food and service.. why should they pay extra? besides, there are many restaurants where it is in your best interest healthwise to not eat what they serve..
On the other hand, when it is a buffet where you can help yourself then you should only take what you can eat.. if you leave something it should be because it isn't palatable. Of course in my opinion, these open buffets ask for these problems because it is inviting all the ravenous appetites to eat there...and it encourages bad eating habits..I don't consider stuffing myself as tho there will be no food for the next 5 days as an exercise in good health or getting my moneys' worth.

After all the customers are paying for their food. It's not like they're getting it free of charge. But yes, it's sad when it's wasted. But sometimes you can't eat it all. Just take some home if possible!

I am so disappointed with the majority here. i think it is obvious that they all misunderstand the whole story. if you don't know if you like something, why would you fill your plate with it? this is for the folks that leave a whole plate of food behind, not a few scraps. DUH!
And BTW, this really does not happen often. you may be lucky to have it happen once a day at the MOST. No wonder Americans are falling behind the rest of the civilized world. We have become a gluttonous, self-centered group of people.

I agree with not wasting food, but I think Americans have a tendency to overeat. The "Clean Plate Club" is still ingrained in many of us. I don't leave an excessive amount of food on my plate at buffets, but if I try something new and don't like it then I don't force myslef to consume the additional calories. I start out at the salad bar and eat every bit of salad. Then I don't feel the need to stack my plate and generally eat all of what I select. I think starting with the salad really helps. Then if I'm still hungry after eating an entree and sides, I go back to the salad section. I still look like an ancient fertility goddess (FAT!), but I'm feeling much better. I like how you phrased your opinion and shared your cultural observations. I hadn't thought of it that way.

No not at all, some restraunts puts way to much food on your plates. They ALL should have different portion sizes for everyone. Where anyone can get a kids meal or a old folks plates, which I always ask for it is much smaller. Charging people is so assinine!

I have seen this in one place. There is a Chinese buffet near me that does charge if there is excessive waste. But they clearly state this is so that they can keep their prices so low. Its $5 for lunch, and $6 for dinner there, which seeing how some people are at these places I can understand
