Should religious hatred of gays be classified as hate crime?

Currently people are allowed to stand on a street corner and wave a sign and shout slogans such as "God Hates Fags!" and "Fags should burn!" and it is protected because it is religion.

If someone did the same thing and rather then attacking gays in such a way did any race at all, black, white, Hispanic, or even if they did genders, they would be arrested and thrown in prison for hate speech and or hate crime.

Why should people be allowed to get away with outright threats to homosexuals when other groups are protected? Choice or not, homosexuals are for the most part adults who deserve to be able to go to the supermarket without having to walk past someone screaming that they deserve death.

Yes, and the key word you just used was "hatred." I strongly believe that people have a right for his or her opinion. And according to most religious scholars, homosexuality is a sin. But just because they feel it is a sin, doesn't give ANYONE a right to mistreat someone because they have a differet lifestyle or think differently about the this topic. If gays are threatened physically or verbally, that person should be arrested for hate crime.

As a Christian, we are to LOVE everyone. Love and Hate do NOT mix.

Most Christians,or any religion, don't hate gays, but are just against gay marriage. But everyone has a right to his/her opinion. Now if that person either insults or hits that person for being gay then it would be wrong.

I'm Catholic and against gay marriage, but it's not like I'm going to avoid gays or hurt them in any way. People are made to lover each other, not hate.

"...slogans such as "God Hates Fags!" and "Fags should burn!"" are not really slogans or threats but odous opinions. The unhappy reality is they are protected under freedom of speech.

Because I constantly hear christian say their bible and their god only teaches love. When they themselves are spewing hate and malice, they are using their bible as a weapon to do that, they are not being christian or following their own ideology. It is completely hipocritical.

Look at it this way. Muslims Harte Gays and Christians, They are honor bound to kill them. Christians can detest them or they can pray for them, but do not have the permission to kill them. This was after the resurrection. St Paul said it in th the Romans chap[er 1,

If they commit a crime yes if they're just acting like total prejudice pricks then sadly we can't but there is an upside aholes like them are making people change their opinion and stop hating people because they're gay.

Crimes are just that crimes, and do not need a label. The term hate crime is misleading because for there to be hate crime, thare must be love crimes, so it is just another political correct thing that we do not need.

If they commit ACTUAL HATE CRIMES, yes. If they simply speak out against it as a sin, no. The Bible does speak against homosexuality. However, Jesus gives no justification for hating anyone.

While some of these nuts claim religion, they are actually covered under free speech. Even ugly, vicious speech is covered under free speech. Their words are not covered under freedom of religion and, clearly, they are not religious in any sense of the word.

If they say, "go kill that man/woman or if they say "I am going to kill you." - that is not covered and should be reported to police immediately - that is a death threat.

We have plenty of laws on the books that can handle this situation, from libel and slander to assault and battery.

Yesterday the Supreme court ruled on the people that claim to be war heros, and are not have a right to that freedom of lies even if we don't like it, and those that say other things also will fall under freedom of speech so no there should not be new laws for this situation.

    Yes.
Saying your religion says it's wrong is fine, just staing your belief.
But the somments such as "God Hates Fags!" and "Fags should burn!" are hate crimes being justified by religion. After all, the bible says a man shouldn't lay with another man, not that they can't love eachother. Homosexuality if perfectly fine according to christianity.
  • BILL Willski 2012/06/29 22:57:44

actually it dont say homosexuality is fine, the person or persons involved are to be loved, but not their activities

like i said, bible never says there's anything wrong with homosexuality, just the physical actions that often follow it. i.e. were i gay, i could love another man, and that'd be fine. But shagging him is a sin, punishable by eternal torment in hell.
