I recycle and fully support anyone willing to do so. I encourage anyone to do so. I do not however support mandates of any kind really. The last thing we need are vastly expensive trash nazis digging through our trash.

We shouldn't take what we have for granted not only because it's killing our earth but also because people in other countries would kill to have the things we throw away everyday,, we shouldn't be so wasteful, not to mention it would probably save lots of money instead of factories making supplies just for it to be thrown away

It should not have to be, but with certain dwindling industrially critical rare earths and metals it may go beyond a choice very soon. You can only drive a mine so deep until there is too much heat, water, or both to make it impractical to continue anymore.

You can't legislate everything in life and who would police such a law/policy. Another government agency is something more damaging than the waste. Everyone should reduce their waste and recycle as much as reasonable but it should be mandated.

Recycling keeps costs down by preserving the materials, manpower, and equipment which would be required to discover new sources of raw materials.

I'm all for recycling do it on several household and automotive things however the word "mandatory" concerns me a little. When was the last time anything the government mandated that actually worked without tremendous overhead, bureaucracy or with any degree of success? How about "encouraged" to recycle.

Recycle what can be re-used into other things. This means taking it to a recycling centre, or recycling something into something new (is often called upcycling) for personal use.

Be nice to the planet, ya' dig?

Just an opportunity for another overreaching government boondogle that would probably cost more than it would ever benefit anyone.

Such a law isn't practically enforceable, and would violate too many liberties in the process.

Although I'm for recycling , it should not be made mandatory. In the past , laws have been passed requiring the recycling of materials without actually providing places to take those used materials so they can be recycled. If recycling is made mandatory that law needs to also include the infrastructure necessary to properly recycle.

The other consideration needs to be profitability. Many materials can be recycled and reused at a profit for all involved in the recycling process , while other materials can only be recycled at a loss.

The city of Knoxville , TN , about 20 miles south of me , instituted a garbage pick-up recycling program some years back. Complete with new trucks that allowed for the separation of materials. However , it lost money consistantly and was abandoned a few years back.

If recycling a material can be done profitably or break even , I say , "Go for it!" But market fluctuations can make some materials expensive to recycle.

It is easy to do,just put the discarded paper in one container, the metals and plastics in another. If one is too lazy to do that maybe they should be prompted to do so. If some do it and others don't the world will be full of trash. Earth day should be the thought every day.

Oh please. Very nice pontification about saving the planet but putting it into practical practice is not going to happen. Americans are not going to sit a sift through their trash and have four or five different trash cans around their house. This may work fine in a commune or for individuals but is not going to work for American society. Look at the Hoop La over the health care mandate and now your going to tell people they have to recycle? Dream on my friends.
Besides who is going to pick up these recyclables? In our local area they only pickup newspaper, aluminum cans and if your lucky and have a coveted orange bag they will take the household batteries. Government is not going to pay the extra to have separated trash collected and in this economic climate taxpayers will be even less enthused

I only vote this because I know how people will rail against someone attempting to make something (even if it's beneficial) mandatory, people should be educated to know the benefits of recycling.

It's sort of like people know that they shouldn't text or talk on the phone while driving yet still continue to do so & 9 times out of 10 someone causes an accident since their eyes were not on the road, they are attempting to pass laws to ban text/talking on cell while driving & people are whining saying they don't want a nanny state or big brother government in their life yet they refuse to be proactive & put the phone down while behind the wheel.

Because lots of cities charge you for it ; or have a rewards plan that varies from being an insentive to not worth the effort to add another chore to maintain & while the indoor receptical collects it before you take it outside to the larger can (like your regular garbage ) , it adds to smelling up your pantry .

I recycle, but that does not mean everyone should be required to do the same.

That's all we need another do nothing government agency sucking up our tax dollars.

The first 2 years we did the separation thing, they sent a truck that had 3 bins for Plastic, Glass and Paper.

Now one truck comes, and everything is thrown into the same bin. Makes me wonder.

Just like all do-gooders. When you can't get people to agree with you and do things as you think they shoud, your good idea becomes law and you force the masses to bend to your will.

Yes, but you know, towns don't make it easy for you with all the regulations and the very small bins they give you. Twice they wouldn't take my recycle bin because the pieces of cardboard were "too large". So I was left with an overflowing bin for the next two weeks. My husband was so upset with them that he's just started throwing everything in the regular trash. I hate that, but I can understand my husband's attitude. It's very frustrating.

I think it should be mandatory in schools and big offices. That would make for a ton of recycled paper. The office I work at just shreds and incinerates our paper, which I think is a waste!

School was made mandatory in the late 1800s; why shouldn't recycling? After all, it doesn't hurt, it only helps.
