Pretty soon, your local high school football field might be brought to you by Duracell, or Wal-Mart.

Dozens of schools across the country have struck corporate sponsorship deals as public schools struggle in a tough economy, MSNBC reports.

Schwanger Bros. & Co. Inc., a heating and air-conditioning company in Lancaster, Pa., owns the rights to the name of Hempfield High School's softball diamond — Schwanger Bros. Field.

“I think the funding is the biggest issue,” Jason Jesberger, president of marketing for Market Street Sports Group of Lancaster, told MSNBC.

Market Street Sports Group brokered naming-rights deals at Hempfield and 10 other school districts in Pennsylvania that he said were “looking for alternate streams of revenue.”

“We know we can’t put it on the tax base or cut teachers,” he told MSNBC.

Well, we'd rather see a big ugly yellow sign than have teachers lose their jobs, or class sizes get bigger. But is there a better way?

Finally, but so as long as they stay out of the school's management structure and not have a say as to the curriculum.

Local companies already sponsor middle schools and high schools in my area. I think it kinda brings together the community...the local companies giving back to the schools.

Yes to both. I say get rid of the public school system entirely.....short of that happening I'd rather see corporate sponsorship than have my damned property taxes hiked....again! Schools seriously need to make budget cuts though, there's way too much non-essential spending.

Alcohol is a legal substance....what's the problem? Head over to Budweiser Gymnasium for basketball practice...then out to Marlboro field for marathon running.

Well since it's not LEGAL until you are 21 it shouldn't be advertised at a highschool

It should be legal...and left up to parental discression...to a point. (Though it was intended for a laugh.)

I don't see why not. There is nothing negative about having advertisements to increase funds. Less teachers will lose their jobs which is a plus.

No, they should all be privatized and run by themselves without corporate "help".

After all, (if they do get corporate funding), the corporations sratched the school's back. Then, it will be the school's turn to return the favor. That's not help at all.

The corporations already have much power (thanks to lobbyists) and government intervention. Why give them the power of molding the next generations as well?

Give schools independence. Support REAL Capitalism: Let the corporations fend for themselves and fight to the death for survival.

I teach in a public school. Coke and pepsi have been fighting for the rights to put in pop machines by donating score boards for at least ten years. I think it is selling out our kids. Just my opinion. The new scoreboards are nice.

budget cuts are attacking schools all over the nation, so it's nice to see that corporations are helping to keep sports programs running. it can also be a way of showing community togetherness, like if it's a local business or corporation throwing support. we've had our school's field littered with signs advertising our sponsors because there is a football tradition where i live and people want to keep it alive. not to mention people from here don't usually leave and they are paying tribute to where they came from. it actually is a fine idea.

Public schools need to be run live a business and obtaining corporate sponsors would be a great way to bring $$ into the schools. It's a fact that you don't become a teacher to make alot of money, but schools should offer incentive bonuses for teachers that over perform and then get rid of the teachers that don't. The problem is that one the funding is low due to all the spending the government does and in the end limits money for education and second, they need to eliminate unions. It's ridiculous that we waste so much money on unions.. We no longer have good teachers in our systems.. yes there are some, but most have retired and the new ones don't stay long because there isn't enough money to be made to live so they all go find other jobs then we are stuck with what's left. the bad ones you can't fire because of unions and it's just a mess... If you don't perform, you're out if you do, here's more money... It's pretty simple...

I think this is a fantastic way for corporations to do something positive in communities. And truly, isn't it really just an investment in the companies futures to sponsor schools? It is in their best interest to ensure that all kids in this country receive a quality education. It also helps the schools make ends meet. I figure this is a win win situation. I do hope that there is some ground rules however. The corporations sponsoring this way should have no power to effect changes in curriculum or policy.

Schools already seek donations from business. So this is nothing new. Hey! If it helps get more real $ into the classroom I'm all for it. Teachers have to buy more and more supplies for their classrooms out of their own pockets.

The school board in my hometown will get more money for stuff; and since they're getting a outsider financing the school system, we might actually spend the funding more usefully.

Since I was a young child, I always thought the advertising signs made sports parks and arenas look trashy. It was bad enough that Little League teams had "Luigi's Pizza" or some such crap emblazoned on their uniforms, but then they began allowing private companies to start buying up stadiums and renaming them. The whoredom needs to stop before kids start graduating from Taco Bell High School. If they need funds, they can quickly get some by cutting some administrators' salaries. Where I came from, the principal was paid $150,000 and the guidance counselor $80,000 per year for sitting on their butts and being jerks, and that was a long time ago.

Why not, it's great for businesses to take an interest in our youth. I was president of the PTA when my kids were little and we often asked local businesses for contributions. Many were happy to help. One year we raised over 30 thousand which helped provide things the school couldn't afford with budget cuts, extra curricular activities, etc.

I think it's a wonderful way to give back to the community. Kohls has annnounce that they are donating (I don't know if it's a sponsorship or not) 5 million to schools.

Why not, Pepsi regularly pays for scoreboards at high school football fileds so long as their logo stays on the display. Schools gets nice stuff and the company gets a little credit. It would matter I guess what the product was. I doubt Trojan, Sheik, Kotex, or Budweiser would be allowed, but stuff like soda and yougurt would probably pass muster.

I don't think that corporations will be running the schools, they are just sponsoring them. Sponsors of athletic teams do not run them.

If they want that to be their way of giving back to the community I don't see a problem with it.
