Should Pregnant Women Wear Spanx?

Let's just preface this by saying that we wore a Spanx garment, once. And we never wore it again.

Celebs swear by Spanx for keeping their tummies tucked in during awards shows and premieres, and regular gals rely on the body-shaping garments for important events like weddings.

Gearing up to attend a summer wedding a couple of years ago, we noticed that our belly could stand to look a little flatter. So we bought a girdle-like Spanx product, and removed it before cocktail hour was over. We value our ability to breathe more than our vanity.

That's why we're shocked to hear that Spanx recently expanded its product line for pregnant women, according to a report in the Globe and Mail.

A visit to the Spanx website proves that pregnancy Spanx do exist. Take the Power Mama ($32), for example.

"Spanx is here to support you, baby bump and all! Power mamas love to look great all nine months and these Power Panties® deliver! These babies grow with you, so choose your pre-pregnancy size!" the site says.

The site also claims that, "Soft yarns stretch with your growing belly" and that the garment "provides lower back support."

But even if these garments are comfortable (which we find hard to believe), isn't it a little sick to suck in a baby bump? For the last time, it's not fat ... it's a baby.

..."we wore a Spanx garment, once."

How many of you got into the Spanx? That's pretty awesome. That would have been a better story than asking whether or not grown women should wear whatever it is they choose.

If they want to. They are not hurting the baby. The baby is well protected. Chances most women are not wearing spanx to hide their baby bump they smoothing out other bumps and ripples. And by way spanx is an undergarment. If it is worn correctly you shouldn't even know she's wearing it.

Absolutely not! Thinking about it is making me uncomfortable. The baby needs to move around and wearing spanx is like imprisoning him/her. The baby will be claustrophobic when born.

Its a bump! how can you 'smooth' it! its just stupid! Pregnant women are already unnessacerily irritable without adding an uncomfortable pair of spanx in the mix! Also the bump will be there regardless, it has no benefits , its not going to make it smaller! Jheeze the world is so materialistic!

Only if it's for a comfort factor, not looks. Anything that makes a pregnant woman more comfortable is OK in my book.

Pregnant woman can wear whatever they feel good in. If it offers back support, it may have benefits.

some don't seem to realize that the abdomen swells when pregnant. If someone is that vain about their appearance, it is a wonder they got pregnant in the first place. For a definitive answer, ask your ob/gyn about the compression

Their choice but I myself would not be wearing it.

Provides lower back support, I doubt it makes that much of a difference..just another thing to get people to buy and wear this.

yes, as long as it adds to comfort. The Spanx is just another kind of belly band and pregnant women have been wearing those for years. If it hurts, stop.

They can do what they want to but I myself think that they look ugly dressed like that. Same as we looked ugly 30 years ago in puff sleeves and huge top.In the middle of these two looks is the best way to me.

When life is inside of you, it should be cherished not squeezed. If you are worried about looking like you are fat, then you shouldn't get pregnant.

It looks like it would be fantastic back support! If only they had that 30 years ago. Just buy it a little too big for you if you worried about squishing the baby.
