Should Pets Be Required to Wear a Seat Belt?

Hmm ... we've never really thought about this one before. Should owners have to buckle up their pets in the car, or face a hefty fine? In New Jersey, penalties for driving with an unrestrained pet range from $250 to $1,000 and as much as six months in jail, NorthJersey.com reports.

pets seat belt

"That’s for each offense," Col. Frank Rizzo, police superintendent for the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, told reporters. "So, if you have more than one animal loose in your car, just do the math…"

The New Jersey statute defines unrestrained pets in cars as animal cruelty. Some pet owners use small cages, but most buy seats and harnesses that attach directly to existing seat belts, NorthJersey.com reports. However, a 2010 survey conducted by the American Automobile Association showed that 20 percent of those polled allow their dogs to sit on their laps while they drive. And nearly one-third of the respondents admitted that unrestrained pets are distracting.

“Some people tell us they like to let their pets hang their heads out the window to take in the fresh air," Rizzo said, "but dogs and cats become projectiles in a crash." Do you think people should be forced to buckle up their pets?

I tie my dog up in the passenger seat or the back seat cause she'll try and jump in my lap (this is no purse dog, this is a 65-70lbs adult black lab, who still thinks she's a puppy) She could obstruct my view! Very dangerous. And for the safety of the dog too, if in a car accident I'd hate to think of my poor girl to fly out the window and getting hurt worst! Pet lover

A dog is not a person.

A dog is not a child.

    A dog is a dog.

While s/he may be man's best friend, I'd rather not TRAUMATIZE my little Pookie, Pepper, or Crystal. I'm NOT about to strap dogs, who are already seemingly claustrophobic by nature, to the back/passengers' seat.

Unless, of course, you're Mitt Romney, in which case yes, the roof-transportation would require a seatbelt. Jerk.

I have to say that at first I was on the fence, but, now I'm for it. if you cant keep them contained then a seat belt would be best.

personally no, but then I don't need them to tellme to buckle my children either. But people tend to not do what is best for everyone else without consiquences

Apparently those running New Jersey much prefer Russia/China than a place where One can make decisions without massive regulations or statutes of over-governance.

I used to keep my dog unbuckled. He was allowed to lay as he pleased since he wouldn't sit still in a seat belt anyways. I hit my breaks just a little too far and in seconds he was in the front seat with me and his face was pressed against the front window. It scared me so bad that he was hurt. luckily, he was fine however i have trained him to fit into a seatbelt now and gotten a special seatbelt in order for him to sit properly in the car and comfortably.

Yes, and the law about dogs roaming around free in the back of pick up trucks need to be enforced by the police. I have been behind such a truck while the police were stopped right next to him and did absolutely NOTHING.

You don't seem to understand that a pet can be badly hurt or cause a very bad accident if you stop suddenly. The pet becomes a projectile within the car. If you love you pet as you love your children you will make them safe.

That's because you look at your dogs as property, not as your family. So sad. I feel bad for those dogs. I bet once they become "useless" to you, you will get rid of them too. Like when they get old.

I grew up on a ranch, so I tend to have a bit more practical viewpoint than you city slickers. At some point, you have to put the dog down. I was raised that you don't hire someone else to do your dirty work, you do it yourself. I have had to shoot my own dogs before and if you do it right, it is a very quick death.

Who is talking about having to end their lives? I am talking about their safety. I have human and animal family members. They're not looked upon as a tool. They are my friends and I love them.

They should have seatbelts. All those liberal idiots who cry, THE CHILDREN THE CHILDREN!, need to also speak up for seatbelts in school buses.

People shouldn't be forced to buckle their pets in, however, it is nice that they make custom fittings for pets so that they could be.

my dogs had those and they also worked well with their comfy booster seats so they could look out the window and still be braced - I can't find a picture but it was like this but taller with a draw under it...

lol well they make them all sizes.... my doggies loved them but like I said it was taller and had they were small so they could sit and look out at the same time.

it looked more like this - and they could fall asleep on long trips and not be subject to being tossed or slid around -- by my wild driving lol

Technically they are suppose to be in cages when they are being transported by vehicle. My greatest pet peeve are dogs on the drivers' lap and they barely can see the road. I feel dogs and others animals should be in some kind of restraints while in the car.

That's because police cars have to make high speed chases sometimes, way above the speed limit to catch criminals. I don't do that and neither do my pets, and I don't think most law enforcement officers want to extra burden of ticketing people for pets that don't wear seat belts, especially if the law enforcement officer aren't gonna get paid any more money for doing more work.
