Should Pets Be Required to Wear a Seat Belt?

Hmm ... we've never really thought about this one before. Should owners have to buckle up their pets in the car, or face a hefty fine? In New Jersey, penalties for driving with an unrestrained pet range from $250 to $1,000 and as much as six months in jail, NorthJersey.com reports.

pets seat belt

"That’s for each offense," Col. Frank Rizzo, police superintendent for the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, told reporters. "So, if you have more than one animal loose in your car, just do the math…"

The New Jersey statute defines unrestrained pets in cars as animal cruelty. Some pet owners use small cages, but most buy seats and harnesses that attach directly to existing seat belts, NorthJersey.com reports. However, a 2010 survey conducted by the American Automobile Association showed that 20 percent of those polled allow their dogs to sit on their laps while they drive. And nearly one-third of the respondents admitted that unrestrained pets are distracting.

“Some people tell us they like to let their pets hang their heads out the window to take in the fresh air," Rizzo said, "but dogs and cats become projectiles in a crash." Do you think people should be forced to buckle up their pets?

I tie my dog up in the passenger seat or the back seat cause she'll try and jump in my lap (this is no purse dog, this is a 65-70lbs adult black lab, who still thinks she's a puppy) She could obstruct my view! Very dangerous. And for the safety of the dog too, if in a car accident I'd hate to think of my poor girl to fly out the window and getting hurt worst! Pet lover

Yeah I would LOVE to see someone try to wrestle one of my German Shepherds into a seat belt. IF ( which I highly doubt they would be able to get them into one) they managed to get them into one the dogs would chew through the belt.

Edit: All of our dogs are really good in the car. They always lay down in the back seat and sleep.. I've never had one try to jump out or stick its head out. The only one that ever trys to get in our laps is the poodle but after he is told to lay down he does.

My dog sits harnessed in the passenger seat. If I had an accident, I don't want him getting killed by the airbag or flying through the windscreen. It's not about control/well behaved pets, it's about the dogs' safety.

Imagine a little puppy flying or your car window!!!! No no no! Its fresh air or a living and unharmed dog. I would rather tie my dog up.

imagine you roll your car and the seat belt shokes your dog to death instead of it dying instantly! which is more cruel?

I have side air bags and my dog has a chair bed where he sits in a safe position from air bag damage to him : )
I would rather have him safe in his dog seat then flying around the car if someone hits me : )

good, don't forces others to do what you think is best.

i applaud you for doing that! i still do not support the government sticking its filthy nose in our everyday lives

Well I do not feel that the government should push this issue it should be up to each pet owner.
The problem is that many pet owners could care less if their pets are safe in any situation.

still no tup to the government to make it law though!

maybe make an ad to suggest it! but don't make it law!

common sense can't be made into law, no matter ho hard you try! people who are careless abou ttheir dogs won't obey that law anyhow, the law will only incriminalize law abiding citizens

Not my dog, she's calm and always automatically lays down in the back seat and goes to sleep when on a car ride. I could see the convince with certain dogs, but then again, it's really hard to restrain some dogs with seat-belts without causing them to riot and freak out.

This is something every dog owner should consider for themselves.

but maybe not to be in your lap...they become your airbag then and its not right...our lab rides in the back and he stays put pretty well..we do have a harness that we can hook to the seat belt for long trips..it is the better idea

Another perfect example of making bad laws based on the assumption that everyone is a bad apple and or idiot. Just because one doofus pet owner can't or won't control their pets does not mean that every pet owner is an idiot who lets their pets run loose all over the car. And the notion that it is somehow cruel to allow a dog to ride unrestrained in the back seat or in the back of a truck, simply because there could be an accident, is bordering on social insanity.

America is being lawed to death and pretty soon, if this type of crud keeps going unchecked, the ivory tower utopian meddlers are going to have socialist block watchers in the form of drones and state nanny cams on every street corner in this country and you will not be able to flush a toilet without them knowing if it was a #1 or #2.

exactly and this law won't change anything, respnsible owners will continue to be respnsible owners, and peopl who don't take care of their dogs properly, still won't!

I'd honestly never thought of it before - kinda strange for someone who fosters rescue dogs too - but it does make sense, especially for some dogs (usually pups) that like to walk around the car & try to gain the attention & affection of the driver, while he or she is driving. It's a bit of a tough one to answer but if my dog looked as cute as the one in the photo, I'd buy it just as much for cuteness as for safety!!

All three of my dogs are in a safety restraint for dogs - but it certainly does not look like the one in that pic with the Yorkie. I put my dogs in restraints for their safety and mine.

As strange as it sounds having pets belted in is probably much safer than allowing them to roam the vehicle. In an accident they will be protected, and they will cause less of a distraction to the owners.

teach your dog how to sit in a vehicle! don'tmake it law to wear seatbelts! seatbelts aren't safer, and often caus more damage then good

I disagree animals shouldn't be forced to stay at home and there are instances in which you have to have your pet in the car like taking them to the vet. I have a mesh fence that goes across my seats so

But neither should they be in the font seat and especially not on the drivers lap. If caught with it on the drivers lap a very stiff fine like say reckless driving should be issued

my 3 big dogs are fine sitting in the back. my little dog hates the car so i put him in his little pet carrier. i think if the dog is running crazy around the car or if they are in the trunk bed they should be ticketed.

Our dog was secure but I do not think it should be law.
For those with dogs riding in the back of open truck beds - Make sure the animal is safe and secure. I hate seeing a dog fall/jump out of the bed and get run over.

My Jack Russells have always travelled in Airline cages which were secured by the seat belt. In a crash they might get rattled around, but can't really hurt themselves or become missiles. The other safety feature being that they can't get out of the car and cause someone else to crash trying to avoid them. The Boxer and GSD had dog seat belts. Tying the lead to a seat belt is foolish , as the dog might have it's neck broken, or swing round and incapacitate the driver or passenger.

If I want to restrain my dog, then i will. I don't need the meddling government making ANOTHER law to tell me what to do. My dogs sit nicely in the back or passenger seat WITHOUT being restrained. If they bug/distract anybody, it is my 6 year old daughter...and that is not necessarily a bad thing.

Well, anything that can't be tied down or fastened in should be in the trunk... you can't put an animal in the trunk.
