Should Pets Be Required to Wear a Seat Belt?

Hmm ... we've never really thought about this one before. Should owners have to buckle up their pets in the car, or face a hefty fine? In New Jersey, penalties for driving with an unrestrained pet range from $250 to $1,000 and as much as six months in jail, NorthJersey.com reports.

pets seat belt

"That’s for each offense," Col. Frank Rizzo, police superintendent for the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, told reporters. "So, if you have more than one animal loose in your car, just do the math…"

The New Jersey statute defines unrestrained pets in cars as animal cruelty. Some pet owners use small cages, but most buy seats and harnesses that attach directly to existing seat belts, NorthJersey.com reports. However, a 2010 survey conducted by the American Automobile Association showed that 20 percent of those polled allow their dogs to sit on their laps while they drive. And nearly one-third of the respondents admitted that unrestrained pets are distracting.

“Some people tell us they like to let their pets hang their heads out the window to take in the fresh air," Rizzo said, "but dogs and cats become projectiles in a crash." Do you think people should be forced to buckle up their pets?

I tie my dog up in the passenger seat or the back seat cause she'll try and jump in my lap (this is no purse dog, this is a 65-70lbs adult black lab, who still thinks she's a puppy) She could obstruct my view! Very dangerous. And for the safety of the dog too, if in a car accident I'd hate to think of my poor girl to fly out the window and getting hurt worst! Pet lover

In all the car or truck crashes I,ve seen or watched ,with animals involved, Not one animal ever got hurt. Restraining your animal puts your animal in jeapordy if ,god forbid, you ever get into a crash.

What do you think a dog will do to it's self if you crashed your car and it was restrained. Might as well just shoott the animal 1st.

no! train your dog not to jump on you! we have a dog and she sits nicely on the back seat!

besides, seat belts laws are STUPID! since when is it up to the government to force us to make descisions on what we will do with our lives? if i don't wear a seat belt, it only hurts ME if i get in an accident! the law is stupid and created by control freaks! stupid liberals who thinks government needs to have their noses in our personal lives in order to have good lives, when in fact it makes our lives less bareable! liberals are paranoid that if government stops controlling our lives we will loose freedoms! when in fact the government controling our every lives is a loss of freedoms!

i mean i went to a swimming pool, and they had camera's in the change room! i mean how far is our loss of freedom gonna go?

seat belts should not be law! as it hurts no one! in fact seat belts in many accidents can kill people! like say a short driver! the seat belt could be his/her guillotine!

ou said it right. I whole heartedly agree. Incremental control . Ihave been railing about this since the 1st child saftey seat came out. Not one of my children rode in one and I haven't lost a child. Seats don't make them safe . Safe driving makes them safe.

Proper education and the owners choice is all that is needed. Trying to legislate intelligence is the problem we have. The more we do it the less we have to think for ourselves and make good decisions for our situation.

I think they should. They can jump around and distract the driver. So, a seatbelt would cut back on a few wrecks I think.

I don't think humans should wear them if they don't want to. It's should be up to the individual.

interesting video, but there seemed to be 3 different sides in the conflict, and the lyrics of the music need to be a little more discernable (perhaps some sort of voice-over chanting the lyrics of the original rock music)

Crate or harness a pet, because most accidents occur close to home...a pet when in an accident can be a deadly projectile when set into motion of an unexpected collesion and can go right into a person or child in the front seat or in the case of suv or station wagon into whatever or whomever is in front of them...for the safety of the animal keep it restrained, it might even go through a winschield

Try using a seat belt on a cat some time. :) and yes, cats CAN and DO get out of their carriers. Mine did all the time.

Yes because if not its possible your dog will die but also no because if its stuck in the seatbelt and lets say the car was fire they are stuck and die to

This is my thinking...a caged or tethered animal in a car crash will only become trapped or worse, strangled and the neck broken in the initial impact. Alot of arguments in support only point out they become projectiles if not tethered, but fail to realize they will be jerked at the neck with every brake use. That is animal cruelty.

How many pets and people have died from being trapped in a seatbelt? My local EMS and police have said repeatedly that they've never known anyone to die in a seatbelt (television drama aside). So I think the numbers are low if they exist at all.

I would like to see someone put my huge dogs in a seatbelt. And a cage big enough to put them in wouldn't fit in my car, and I'm pretty sure if I belted them they would chew their way out. ( I have German shepherd mixes )

By the same argument, the animal could be trained to not jump on the driver's lap.

    darlenedoskas1969
yep, but they can't be trained not to fly through the windshield in an accident
  • Michelle darlene... 2012/06/12 20:58:57

But they can be trained to lie in the backseat where they won't be thrown through the window in the case of an accident.

Ok both of my dogs lay quietly in the back seat on the floor. They are trained to do this. As far as the chewing goes, cars arnt ergonomicly designed. To be comfortable for a dog who when sitting leans forward if I attempted to buckle my dogs in they would chew their way out based on comfortably alone.

I live in a small town, and almost without fail see dogs who have been brought along to worry and bark in various cars and in the back of pickups. And on really hot days, just cracking a window doesn't protect them from excessive heat buildup. I really think they should be taken for a walk rather than a ride. On walks they can sniff things as they go--unless they're stuck with a self-absorbed hurry-up owner.

Strapping animals in would be cruel and inhuman punishment that their minds would not understand.

Another form of animal cruelty is hitching a dog's leash to a bicycle and making the animal keep up. Dogs age and have aches and pains like everyone else--and this practice is what should draw large fines. It's also a traffic hazard.

I have taken dogs along in vehicles. When I used to head out berry-picking or wood-cutting, the dog enjoyed exploring bits of new and wondrous territory. Also taking the dog along to visit relatives often beat the hell out of putting a member of the family in a pound.

If one is going to have a pet, one should look at things from the animal's standpoint.
    I don't think corporations are people . . . but dogs are.

I've used the bike and leash method before, but it was always more a case of the dog making me keep up.
